The play-off places for the second division had already been decided before this week’s games but the form book was confirmed as Pembroke, Burton and Hook all won with ease and both Vets’ teams, plus Hundleton, still occupy 4th, 5th and 6th places.

Match One

Harries inspires Pembroke to comfortable victory

Pembroke (107 for 5) beat Pembroke Vets B (77 all out) by 30 runs

Neal Williams - top scorer for VetsJack Harries - more superb batting for PembrokeJack Harries has been in inspirational form for Pembroke and this match was again no exception because the opener retired on 25 and later returned to blitz the Vets A bowlers for an unbeaten 59, which contained four boundaries and was all the more impressive because it was made from only 26 balls, which showed his ability to judge threes to perfection.

His contribution was all the more significant because he lost Jon Rogers (caught by Neal Williams off Kevin Bowen for 1), Sam Davies (4) and Charlie Perkins (1), both run out.

Luke Butler, doubling up as skipper and wicket-keeper added 14 in 11 balls before he became the third batsman who suffered the same fate.

But the innings received a further boost when No 6 batsman Andrew Price, making a welcome return to action, belted 23 in ten deliveries, including two fours, before he fell to the canny slow stuff of Ian Milsom, who bowled well alongside Neal Williams (0 for 10) and Leighton O’Connor (0 for 19).

When the Vets A gave chase they lost a key run-maker in Kevin Bowen, (run out for 6) but Neal Williams scored 27 off as many deliveries before he was run out when he returned late on in the innings.

Andrew Williams chipped in with 13 (12 balls) but Jack Harries was again involved as Sam Davies took a good catch - and the innings folded quickly as O’Connor (9), David Haynes (6) and Milsom (0) were all run out as Pembroke rounded off their campaign with accurate bowling and sharp fielding - and victory by a sizeable margin.

Match Two

Burton batsmen run riot

Burton (122 for 0) beat Pembroke Vets A (44 all out) by 78 runs

Jack Davies - more runs and a wicket for BurtonDan Ridge - batted and bowled well for BurtonBurton have made giant strides in their first indoor cricket campaign and the improvement was evident as they hammered a Pembroke Vets B outfit which has failed to find much form this season and found it hard going from the outset as all Burton’s talented young batsmen caused havoc so that they retired at the mandatory score and didn’t lose a single wicket in amassing a very big total.

Toby Hayman (30) and Jack Davies (27) gave them a flying start before Dan Ridge and Harry Owen chipped in with 27 and 26 respectively - and it was left to Luke Hayman (7) and Morgan Scale (5) to be there at the end of their allotted ten overs, with Alan Webster the only bowler to keep them relatively quiet with his 0 for 17 analysis from two overs.

In sharp contrast, the Vets A team found it difficult to master the swinging ball as Luke Hayman claimed 1 for 11 in two overs, Harry Owen grabbed 2 for 14 from his 1.5 overs alongside one-over spells from Jack Davies (1 for 10), Toby Hayman (1 for 4) and Dan Ridge (0 for 1).

Unusually, there was only one run out for Dan Griffiths (7) as Paul Webb (11), Alan Webster (4) and Andrew Williams (3) all fell to return catches, and Mike Williams (13) was bowled by Owen in his excellent spell to see The Vets shot out in only 6.5 overs

Match Three

Hook show their all-round strength

Hook (134 for 1) beat Hundleton (77 for 5) by 57 runs

Jonathan Willington - back playing with a bang Lewis Miller - outstanding for HookHook are another new team this campaign, with Daf Bowen supplying the experience in a sextet where all the others are very talented young players, with Lewis Miller (27) joining his brother Liam (26), Harry Makepeace (26) and Aled Phelps (29), as the major contributors before Bowen (17) was run out from the last ball of the innings.

Then Lewis Miller proved almost unplayable with the ball as there were only two scoring shots in his two overs which he finished with fine figures of 2 for 7 by having Craig Williamson (4) caught by Bowen and Stuart McNiffe (0) from a catch by Aled Phelps.

Steffan Williams (14) was caught by Makepeace off Aled Phelps and Jonathan Williams (6) was run out and David Lockyer fell to Bowen as Aled Phelps took a second catch.

There was an unlikely top scorer for Hundleton in Jonathan Willington, who had gone along to score for Hook and when the opposition found themselves a man short he stepped in to help them out and hit a couple of fours and a straight six in his excellent 28 not out.

So Hook won by a huge margin but Mr Willington went home with them wearing a large smile - and if The Vets are looking to strengthen their squad for next season then they could do worse that look at him because he also bowled well!
