D.R.Morris Cup – First Round:
There were three more matches last night with some useful early-season performances as Carew won their local derby against Lawrenny, Burton slammed Herbrandston and St Ishmaels accounted for Haverfordwest on The Racecourse with one ball to spare.
Whitfield maintains his good form
Carew (156 for 4) beat Lawrenny (132 all out) by 24 runs
Rhys Davies (29) and James Hinchliffe (26) also made useful contributions despite the efforts of Lawrenny bowlers Steve Lewis (2 for 25), Harry Thomas (1 for 36) and Ryan Morton (1 for 34) but a total of 156 for 4 was a challenging total for the visitors.
Kyle Marsh has also been in fine fettle for Lawrenny and he launched some big shots in his 44 as Joe Kidney (22), Troy Pursloe (19) and Thomas (10) managed double figures but got out just as they looked set.
Sam Harts led The Rooks’ bowling with 3 for 40 as reward for a typical 100% bowling performance alongside Whitfield (2 for 18), Hinchliffe (2 for 34), Rhys Davies (1 for 22) and Iori Hicks (1 for 15) to earn their side another tough tie at St Ishmaels next week.
Burton bash off-key Herbie
Burton (145 for 6) beat Herbrandston (68 all out) by 77 runs
Toby scored 36 runs but was beaten to the ‘top scorer’ tag by Dan Ridge (39), with support from Jack Davies (16), Luke Hayman (14) and Morgan Scale (11 not out) despite the efforts of Harry Nicholas (2 for 25) and John Camani (2 for 26).
But after Ryan Davies had batted well for his 34 the next highest scorer was Aaron Bowles (8) as they lurched to 68 all out as Johnny Scale (3 for 7) and Luke Hayman (4 for 16) with Jack Davies took a late wicket without conceding a run – and Burton now travel to Whitland or Narberth in the second round.
Pawlett pounces to ease Tish through at The Racecourse
Haverfordwest (124 for 7) lost to St Ishmaels (125 for 4)
For Haverfordwest, Adam James was bowled first ball of the match by Jon Pawlett but Mikey Jones was back with top score of 40, ably assisted by Ben Field (31) and ‘Mr Extras’ (19) although The Town lost their way a little in the middle order as Pawlett (1 for 29) Brennan Devonald (1 for 30) Peter Bradshaw (1 for 23) and especially Robbie Thomas (1 for 17) kept a brake on the run rate, assisted by three run outs as the pressure built.
Peter Bradshaw (14) started well for Tish but they slumped to 35 for 3 before Pawlett found a willing ally in Phil Cockburn as they put on a stand of 81 before Cockburn departed with 24 to his name, including one big six.
Pawlett also smashed a six alongside six fours and paced his innings well after James had conceded only five runs from his four overs so that Tish went home with a victory despite the efforts of Jack Bevan (2 for 18), Jake Merry (1 for 29) and skipper Chris Phillips (1 for 9).
