Pembrokeshire Referees’ Society

OFFICIAL STATEMENT:

Referee Neill CrawshawAs Chairman of Pembrokeshire Referees Society, I feel obligated to speak out about the increasingly unacceptable behaviour, hostility and abuse being directed towards match officials across our county.

The situation is serious, it is damaging our game, and it cannot be allowed to continue.
Every weekend, referees give up their time to support grassroots football. In return, far too many face relentless criticism, verbal abuse, intimidation and a complete lack of respect from individuals both on and around the pitch.

Football is passionate, decisions will be questioned, frustration is fine. Abuse is not.
What concerns me most is the impact this toxic environment is having on the people who keep our game alive.

These are not faceless officials, they are our friends, neighbours, colleagues and members of our own communities. They give up their weekends because they love football, and they deserve to be treated with basic dignity and respect.

Yet referees are becoming disillusioned, frustrated and unwilling to tolerate this treatment, some have already made it clear that this season will be their last.

Let that sink in!

We risk losing experienced officials who have dedicated years to Pembrokeshire football, alongside newer referees who should represent its future.
And for what? Because some individuals cannot accept a decision or conduct themselves with basic decency.

I am calling upon the Pembrokeshire Football League, club committees, managers, coaches, players and supporters to take collective responsibility.
Clubs must challenge unacceptable behaviour both on and off the pitch, and League authorities must ensure that incidents are taken seriously and those responsible are held accountable.

Respect cannot simply be a slogan. It must be demonstrated through actions.
As Chairman, I will continue to stand firmly behind our referees. Referees will make errors, just as players and managers do. But no mistake, no disputed decision and no result ever justifies personal abuse, threats or intimidation.

To those who believe abusing referees is simply part of football, you are part of the problem, and you are driving people away from the game.
If we continue to lose referees, fixtures will be affected, matches may go uncovered and ultimately it will be the clubs and players who suffer.

We need the League, clubs and Referees Society working together to agree meaningful steps to protect our officials and the future of our game.
The warning signs are already there. We cannot say we were not warned.

My message is explicit
Protect our referees. Respect our referees. Hold those responsible for abuse, accountable.
Because without referees, there is no football.
The time for talking is over. The time for action is NOW.

**PembrokeshireSport.co.uk will produce our detailed comment in the near future but we must state clearly that we have total sympathy for referees, who need a skin like a rhinoceros alongside a deep love of football to stick some of the vile abuse from players and especially the touchline.

We have been embarrassed and outraged by some of the filth hurled at match officials and it really has to stop on a game which locally should be respectful to all and without a disease that has crept into our game!

*Please note that any such behaviour on our site in response to this balanced statement will see the culprit immediately banned because we want to encourage decent behaviour and respect by all who love sport!*
