MacWhirter Welsh League League - Division one

Monmouth Town 0 – Haverfordwest County 2

Haverfordwest County have marched to the top of the table on goal difference after overcoming ten-man Monmouth Town in a tense encounter in Gwent.
Bluebirds soaring to the top of the table

The visitors grabbed crucial goals in the second half from Steffan Williams and Jack Christopher to clinch the points that have perched the Bluebirds at the summit.

Haverfordwest County, and Taffs Well, plus Cambrian and Clydach, are all on 49 points, as the end of the season is heading for a tense and thrilling finale.

This was the Bluebirds’ 14th win of the season, with three games to go until the end of the campaign. Goalkeeper Peter Blain played an important role and must feel well satisfied that he kept his 14th clean sheet of the season.

Stunning saves

The Bluebirds played well and were unlucky not to lead at the interval. The visitors’ outstanding goalkeeper Kieran Blackburn denied Christopher, Williams and also Ritchie Lewis from a wicked free kick.

After the break the homesters were reduced to ten men when their striker was issued a straight red card for leaving his foot in on goalkeeper Peter Blain.

The Bluebirds broke the deadlock in the 68th minute when Williams broke clear and showed good composure in front of goal and slotted past Blackburn.

Chris O’Sullivan should have added a second but his well-struck effort from the penalty spot was brilliantly saved by Blackburn.

Terrific finish

However, the Bluebirds put the result beyond doubt in the 72nd minute when Williams set-up Christopher and the striker nonchantly chipped Blackburn for a terrific finish from 30 yards out.

Next Saturday the Bluebirds face third-placed Cambrian and Clydach in a ‘must win’ game if they are going to secure the title.

Joint manager Wayne Jones was thrilled with his team’s performance and said, “This was our best display of the season. We are coming good at just the right time.”
