Rob Morgans scores from the spot for Goodwick

Division One:
Diamond shines for Herbie!
Goodwick United 3 - Herbrandston 4
Two second-half goals by Hayden Diamond helped Herbrandston gain victory over Goodwick United at Phoenix Park and left the home side reflecting on the fact that they took the lead three times but gave away soft goals that Herbie accepted eagerly.
The teams had already drawn at Herbrandston and although this wasn’t by any means a classic because of the way that both teams gave the ball away, especially in the first half hour, there was enough action to have both sets of supporters convinced that they should have won.
Steff fires Goodwick ahead
Goodwick took the lead with a cracker of a goal from teenager Steffan Hayes as he showed real composure before blasting a half-volley into the roof of the net – but then a crazy misunderstanding in the Goodwick defence just two minutes later allowed Herbie’s Jason Clark to top home from two yards.
The homesters also hit the woodwork through Lewis Banks and Rhys Dalling posed a threat but the Herbie defence, well marshalled by Dan Armstrong stood firm until half time.
Morgans nets from the penalty spot
Goodwick recaptured the leady when Johnny Horgan was hauled down in the box and Rob Morgans slammed his spot-kick past Wolfgang Ackerman but then they conceded possession in midfield and Scott Reid’s commitment was rewarded when he scored with a left foot low volley.
Some silly defensive work by Herbie allowed Hayes to make it 3-2 but straight away Goodwick returned the favour as they allowed Craig Nicholson to put Diamond in for his first goal.
Diamond drives Herbie home
Herbie sealed their success when Armstrong’s clearance was lofted forward by Josh Smart and Diamond’s wicked left foot was again in action as he gave James Gwilt no chance with a low drive.
There was still time for Johnny Horgan to hit the bar for Goodwick but Herbie survived a few late scares to seal success – and leave Goodwick with nothing to show for their efforts!
