West Wales Intermediate Cup – Round 4
Carew 2 – Hakin United 2
(Hakin United won 4-3 on penalties)
Hakin United dramatically beat Carew on penalties to progress in the West Wales Intermediate Cup quarter finals after full time and extra time as the two Pembrokeshire heavy weights could not be separated, writes Gordon Thomas.
Shane Walsh struck the first goal for the visitors, Sonny Phillips was sent off for a deliberate handball, Walsh missed the subsequent penalty. On stroke of full time Adam Muskett equalised. Walsh gave the Vikings the lead in first period of extra time, but Max Brindley slid in at far post to level matters and force the tie to penalties.
Both sides have already met twice in the league this season, it finished 2-2 at the Obs, then the Rooks narrowly lost 5-4 at the Rec.
There was a decent crowd watching this eagerly awaited cup clash in cold blustery conditions.
Dangerman hits crossbar
Scott Davies’ Vikings started brightly as dangerman Walsh rattled Tom Davies’ crossbar in the early exchanges.
The visitors broke the deadlock in the 27th minute in stunning fashion, Ben Aldred’s long searching ball over the top saw Walsh run onto it as he instinctively struck a superb looped right footed effort over Davies in the far corner.
Midway through the second period Rob Scourfield’s Carew outfit were reduced to ten-men as Phillips used his hands to prevent Jack Britton goal bound shot from scoring, from the resultant penalty it was left to Walsh who uncharacteristically fired wide.
Muskett scores late equaliser
In the 96th minute the Vikings regained the lead with a stunning strike from Walsh, the striker struck a vicious 20-yard volley which flew in the top corner.
But fair play to the Rooks they refused to lie down and replied with a well worked goal to level matters. A wicked corner flew into the Vikings’ box which saw Brindley slide in at the far post to once again square matters.
Settled from the spot
There were no further goals in the second period of extra time, so the game was settled on penalties which the Vikings dramatically won 4-3. Leon Luby missed the first one for the Vikings, but Camron Thomas, Gareth Fawcett and Ashley Bevan were all successful - then it was left to Ben Aldred who confidently stepped up to strike the winner for the delighted Vikings.
