In the era of ‘competitive’ footballers in the Pembrokeshire League, Roy Dawes was right up there with the best and enjoyed the combative nature of football at the time and many of his goals saved Hakin United on numerous occasions and made Hakin United a formidable opponent.
Roy was associated with Hakin United for as long as I can remember, more than 50 years, as a player, committee man and a staunch, loyal and vocal supporter on ‘The Slab’. He was extremely proud when his son Gary captained the Club to their first championship in 28 years and Roy can be viewed in the many photos of the day with a smile as wide as the haven he used to work on for Cory Tugs.
Roy also enjoyed a pint at the Waterloo Club near his home in Waterloo Square, where he would discuss football, whether it be Hakin United or Manchester United with his Liverpool-supporting friends.
Roy will be sorely missed on ‘The Slab’ and by everyone at Hakin United as well as his friends in the wider community and we offer our condolences and deep sorry to Carol and family for their loss as Roy was a truly larger than life character.
*This article was written by some of his many friends at Hakin United and we at PembrokeshireSport would like to thank them and also like to extend our deepest condolences to his wife Carol, and sons Gary and Martin and family – and thanks for allowing us to use this lovely photograph of Roy.
