2023 Senior Cup Semi-Final
Tenby 0 - Goodwick United 1
Super sub Nathan Greene grabbed a late goal to earn Goodwick United a slender victory against battling Tenby on a cold Wednesday night at the Ogi Bridge Meadow Stadium.
The Phoenix Lads came into this semi-final as the clear favourites against a Tenby outfit who are currently fifth place in the Division Two table.
However, Chris O’Sullivan’s Goodwick outfit didn’t have it easy as Tenby battled all the way, they created some decent chances mainly through striker Scott Ferney who was unlucky not to take any of them.
Cruelly for Tenby their keeper Dylan Noot who had a brilliant game made one mistake and got punished as Greene pounced for the winner in the 79th minute which secured their place in the final.
Goodwick set up an early chance as Will Haworth cut in from the left and struck from distance which keeper Dylan Noot saved, minutes later Noot pulled off a double save to deny the Division One league leaders.
Jonny Horgan’s low cross from the left was met by Rhys Dalling who struck a an instinctive first time drive from inside the box which Noot somehow stopped with his foot.
Skipper Dan Storer made a penetrative run from half way into the box, there was a strong shout for a penalty as the big man took a tumble, referee Craig Templeton waved play on.
In the 28th minute Goodwick were forced to make a change when striker Dalling (who took a knock earlier) was replaced by Nathan Greene.
Ferney flashed a 25 yard direct free kick wide of the target, at the other end Greene released Horgan who whipped in a cross that Haworth struck his first time shot wide.
Neither side could find the back of the net as it stayed goalless at half time.
Shortly after the break Jerome Mansbridge broke down the right his high cross was fumbled by keeper James Wilt, but the keeper gathered at the second attempt as Tenby looked to break the deadlock.
Goodwick should have scored as Jonny Horgan had two bites of the cheery, firstly his shot was parried by Noot then his second blocked by a defender.
Minutes later Tenby missed a glorious opportunity as Ferney broke through but the striker pushed his shot wide with a one-on-one with Gwilt.
Noot pulled off an incredible save to deny Haworth as Jake Smith put in the wide man, but his shot was miraculously stopped by the outstanding keeper.
In the 78th minute a cruel error by Noot who lost possession on the edge of his box allowed Greene to capitalise as he gained possession and duly rolled the ball into an empty net.
Minutes later Tenby were unlucky not to equalise as Ferney curled a low shot agonisingly wide of James Gwilt’s left hand post.
