Played in atrocious weather, the team of Ros Williams, Ria Phillips, Lynne Rees, Carol Blackwell and Mary Lewis won the first round of the national Mail on Sunday Classic golf competition against a strong Trefloyne team. This close match was two and a half points to each team after the five matches had been played.
Ros Williams and Ann Morgan therefore had to play extra holes to decide the match – and fortune was on Ros William’s side as she won after one extra hole so South Pembrokeshire went forward to the second round against a team from Tenby.
The match against Tenby was played in better but not ideal weather, but the team of Ros Williams, Ria Phillips, Lynne Rees, Carol Blackwell and Sara Davies again came through with a 3/2 win. The South Pembrokeshire ladies managed to survive some good play by a very strong Tenby team, in a very closely fought match from the first to the last hole.
In the third round they faced another very strong team from Newport Links. The South Pembrokeshire ladies, who again had home advantage, won by three and a half to one and a half points. This score did not reflect the closeness of individual matches – which could have gone either way.
In the next round the South Pembs ladies face Derlys Court ladies at Derlys Court – another good and experienced team, and no doubt another hard contest.
