The pairing of Ros Williams and Ria Phillips were up against the strong pairing of Ruth Noott and Barbara Evans of Newport Links Golf Club in the first round in the Daily Mail foursomes competition, played under match play rules – where the weather was kind and the match was played in warm sunshine.
This match was so gruelling and hard fought that although the South Pembrokeshire pair was three up after 15 holes, by the 18th they were all square after Newport took the next three holes.
High pressure – and Janet feeds them well!
This was a high pressure and exhausting game for both pairs, and one where the balance of luck fell on the side of South Pembrokeshire after it took a further 5 holes to separate the pairs and for South Pembrokeshire to come out the winners.
The match took longer that expected, and the restaurant was officially closed – the ladies however appreciated the caterer Janet Norrie staying to prepare them a meal that they all so richly deserved.
Ros and Ria went forward to the next round that was played at Carmarthen Golf Club. Another long and close match against Julie Webb and Sue Convery going to the 20th hole before the Carmarthen ladies came out the winners. Another game that could have gone either way, and one that was enjoyed by the South Pembrokeshire ladies even though the result did not go their way. They wish every success to the Carmarthen ladies and hope they make good progression in the competition.
