Haverfordwest Golf Club has won the final of the Golf Union of Wales ‘Ping Mixed Foursomes’ after battling their way to the final stages in matches across Wales.
The special format involves three mixed pairs competing for the club in a strict foursomes’ event where players must play alternate shots at a single ball, with a play-off involving one pair if the teams are level at the conclusion.
Battling spirit showed throughout
The semi-final and final stages were held at Rhuddlan Golf Club in North Wales after the Haverfordwest team beat Builth Wells, Penrhos, Derllys Court and Pontypridd in some hard fought matches over the summer to progress to the Semi Final stage where they were drawn to play Dinas Powys.
Two points were required for a spot in the final and these were won by Jason Edwards and Sarah Bevan, alongside the ever-reliant pairing of Simon Brady and Rachel Mason.
Nerve-wracking final
The final against Cottrell Park was extremely close, with Simon and Rachel winning yet another point, the score was 1-1 which meant that the final pairing of Mark and Elspeth Owen had to win. They were two down on the 15th but they managed to stage what was a tense, exciting comeback to secure the winning point on the 18th green.
