Llanelli Town 2 – Haverfordwest County 0

Llanelli Town took control of the title race with this comfortable two-goal victory against fellow title seekers Haverfordwest County at Stebonheath Park on Tuesday night.

This crucial result sees The Reds move 12 points clear at the top of the table, while the Bluebirds have two games in hand; this result was huge blow for their own Welsh Premier League aspirations.

Goals in each half by Chris Jones and former Swansea City star Lee Trundle secured three vital points for The Reds.

Jones strikes opener

The Reds opened the scoring in the seventh minute; Chris Jones received a pass from Trundle, and the left side midfielder cleverly beat right back Matthew Broome before burying his low shot into the far corner and put his team in control.

The Bluebirds didn’t create a lot in front of goal in the first period; the one chance of note saw Danny Williams flash a shot from distance wide.

Eleven minutes before the break and the homesters were unlucky not to double the lead, James Loveridge’s vicious direct free-kick crashed against Connor McFenton’s crossbar.

The Reds deservedly led one-nothing at the interval.

Trundle works magic

After the break and in injury time The Reds went further ahead when Trundle worked his magic inside the box and fired into the back of the net - and there was no way back for the stunned The Bluebirds.

After the game the Haverfordwest County camp understandably felt bitterly disappointed with the final outcome and for all their territory and possession in the second half they should have grabbed at least a draw - but 'Magic Daps' Trundle had other ideas as he struck late to put the champagne on ice for The Reds.

Haverfordwest County: Connah McFenton; Matthew Broome; Alaric Jones; Sean Pemberton (Captain); Tim Hicks; Ricky Watts; Elliot Scotcher; Greg Walters; Declan Carroll; Danny Williams; Steff Williams. Substitutes: Leon Luby; Charlie Davies; Ryan Thomas; Nicky Palmer; Joe Pritchard
