Aberystwyth Town 2 – Haverfordwest County 1

Ten-man Aberystwyth Town gained a slender victory against Haverfordwest County under lights at Park Avenue on Friday night.

Harry Arnison opened the scoring which gave The Seasiders a one goal cushion at the break, five minutes after the interval John Owen added his side’s second, eight minutes later Jordan Davies pulled one back for the visitors, late in the game Ben Fawcett had an effort disallowed for offside and the Seasiders had David Evans sent off following a second bookable offence.

Following this defeat The Bluebirds have slipped to ninth in the table as Aber moved up to eighth.

Bluebirds boss Tony Pennock was bitterly disappointed with the final outcome as he gave an honest appraisal to Sgorio post-match.

“I have to take the blame myself really. I put a 16-year-old on for 30 minutes you go and he’s the best player in our team. We all got to look at ourselves really, he’s come on at sixteen and done what he did, so we can all be disappointed, but you got to look at yourself in the mirror and see we went wrong, a lot of people have to do that tonight.”

Pennock added after Haverfordwest County have exited two cup competitions: “The league is our bread and butter and if you don’t take your chances, you don’t win games of football, and I’m fed up with saying the same thing week in week out and that’s all I have said all season. Here is another game we have lost by one goal, we keep shooting ourselves in the foot.”

Asked why his team are not having the rub of the green?

“You make your own luck in this game. It’s not about luck it’s about quality, we’re just lacking quality in the final third, at the same time we’ve gifted them two goals tonight, we’ve hardly seen a team work for a good goal against us. To be fair Aberystwyth defended really well, any ball that came into the box they would win it, in both boxes. Balls dropped they cleared them. Like I said it was only when Harri John came on we had a spell of possession and looked a threat.”

Asked if his team are up for the battle?

“We got Bala and TNS in our next two games. I’m certainly up for the battle, so let’s hope there is another group of people who want to join me in that battle.”
