Eddie's Pembs Snooker League Powell Cup:

There was some top class snooker played in the final of the Powell Cup at the Conservative Club last week before Steve Cook and Mark Cleeverly (Saundersfoot Social Club) beat Viv Price and Jamie Greenish (Manchester Club in an absorbingly close final.

In this best of five frames final to decide which is the best doubles’ pairing in Pembrokeshire, in front of a decent sized audience, fortuned ebbed and flowed up until the final shot.

The first frame started with some excellent safety, but Jamie got in with a break of 16 and the Milford Haven pair was soon nearly 30 points in front before Mark reduced the arrears and Steve got in on the act, but the Manchester Club still took the first frame.

Some more excellent safety play started the second frame, but Mark got in eventually with a break of 25 that secured the frame victory for Saundersfoot.

The Saundersfoot duo soon trailed by 19 points in the third frame, and Viv duly closed out the frame with a break of 25.

In the fourth frame Steve opened up with a break of 16 and Saundersfoot had a 20-odd points lead. Viv then potted a lovely long red, and with the break on 16 he inexplicably missed a blue which could have sealed the match. But then Mark stepped in with a break of 25 to secure the frame.

It nicely set up a tension-filled deciding frame, where all the players produced some excellent safety play, but Mark and Steve managed to edge the scoring, and potted the high scoring colours to secure victory by a 3-2 margin.

The referees for the final were Colin and Darren McCarthy, and committee man Peter George presented the trophies.

Eddie’s Pembrokeshire Snooker League secretary Malcolm King celebrated his 70th birthday.

The Manchester Club steward prepared a special cake and Malcolm can be seen blowing out the candles and making a wish – probably for a break of 70 on the snooker table.

Happy birthday Mr King!
