Eddies Pembrokeshire league cup snooker

THE two top teams in division one, Manchester A and Balfour A, fought out the semi final of the Jimmy Allen Cup at the Waterloo Club last week.

The format of the competition was two frames of singles and two frames of doubles, totting up the aggregate score.

In the first frame Anthony Griffiths (Balfour) played Peter George, and after a slow start the Balfour player took the initiative. Anthony managed to score on nearly every visit to the table without making any significant breaks, and he ran out an easy winner by a massive 53 points.

Simon Pearce and Terry McBride (Balfour) played Adrian Mathias and Godfrey Almond, and the Balfour pair kept the pressure on, giving the Manch pair hardly any chances to peg back the deficit. A good display of containing snooker saw the Balfour pair win by 27 points.

Two of the most experienced players in the league were matched in the next frame when Raymond Hoare (Balfour) took on Viv Price, who gained an early lead. But the Balfour player did not panic, and he dug in to catch up and went on to eventually win the frame by 23 points.

The Manch pair of Jamie Greenish and Ashley Dundas faced a massive deficit over 100 points in the last frame, and at one point had a glimmer of hope. But the experienced Alan Griffiths and Peter Smiddy dug in and saw the frame out.

In the other semi final Saundersfoot Sports Club played the Waterloo Club at the British Legion.
In the first frame the Foot’s Dai Wooles had a convincing win over Dafen Hughes, giving his team a 37 point lead.
The Waterloo pegged back the lead when brothers Martin and Steven Hartley took the honours against Steve Barlow and Glyn Davies by 22 points.

Darren Morgan (Foot) lost to the experienced Ceri Morgan by seven points, which set up a tense final frame with the Foot 22 points in the lead.

In a nailbiting frame the experienced Mark Cleeverly and Martin Durham (Foot) kept their composure and beat Richard Hughes and Steve Dalton by just one point.

The semi finals of the D T Pearce Cup for division two were played on the same night when the Manchester B played Hook B at the Conservative Club.

The first frame saw Richard James (Hook) gain a big win over Geoffrey Barrett by 38 points, but the Manch hit back in the next frame when league secretary Malcolm King and David Gray beat Mark James and Terry John by 19 points.

Paul Whisby (Manch) lost to the experienced Matthew Holder by 28 points, and Hook ran out easy winners when John Davies and Steve John kept their nerve to best Phil Whisby and Jason Hackett in the last frame.

In the other semi final, Ben Fantham got Neyland off to a good start, beating John Rackley (Conservative Club) by 19 points. But the Cons came back in the next frame when Rob Mayne and Wayne Clayton beat Glyndwr Lewis and Brian (WMB) Griffiths by 12.

Colin McCarthy (Cons) had a good win against David James in the next frame by 28 points, but the experienced Chris Walters and Brian Griffiths saw Neyland book a final place in the last nailbiting frame when they beat Matthew Rackley and Darryl McCarthy.
