There was a great start to the year with five of Pembrokeshire’s finest up and coming powerlifters heading to Pontardawe, Swansea, to compete at the 2015 Welsh Championships, and with Lucy Elcomb, Penny and Adrian Phillips, Steven Arnold and Andrew Murphy all winning their respective classes.
Lucy lifted in the 60kg women’s, open class, winning easily with an 80kg squat, 37.5kg bench and 105kg deadlift.
Penny Phillips, in the 67.5kg women’s Master Two class with a 82kg squat, 40kg bench and 105kg deadlift, also won her first Welsh title.
Silver to gold medal trio
Next up were the three silver medallists from last year’s World Championships in France and Steven Arnold, Andrew Murphy and Adrian Phillips all showed great improvement to win gold medals.
Steven, in the 82.5kg open class, won easily with a 215kg squat, 150kg bench and 205kg deadlift.
Andrew Murphy did really well as he took the 90kg junior class with a strong 210kg squat, 135kg bench and 210kg deadlift.
Adrian Phillips dominated the 90kg Master Two (50+) class with a 205kg squat, 135kg bench press and 230kg deadlift.
Their success now means they will join multi world champions Paul Murphy and Aaron Hoskings at the 2015 British championships in Glasgow in April.
