Merlins Bridge Amateur Boxing Club can proudly boast of four newly-crowned Welsh champions since the club, based in Haverfordwest and run by Graham Brockway, has two youth, one junior and a women champion in their ranks.

Peter Price, (aged 17 and 56kg) and 16 year old Mickey McDonagh (52kg), won their respective titles at the National Championships held at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, whilst 15 year old Dylan Davies, won the 60kg category and will now represent Wales’ junior squad who will box in Scotland on May 2-3.

Not content with that terrific success, Peter and Mickey did brilliantly at the Great Britain Youth Amateur Championships that was held at Magna Science Adventure Centre, Rotherham, South Yorkshire at the weekend, where ultra-talented Mickey boxed superbly to win gold and was crowned British champion, whilst Peter also boxed really well to claim bronze.

Charlene earns international recognition

Charlene Jones retained the Welsh Women’s 60kg title with another emphatic display and her reward will be as part of the Wales’ team that will box in Spain for the Spanish Cup on May 3rd-10th. Then Charlene will participate in the British Women’s Championship, which will be held in Liverpool on May 23rd-24th.

Thrilled Bridge coaches, Graham Brockway and Mark Jenkins are extremely proud of their boxers’ achievements.
“They’ve all worked hard and can now reap the rewards,” said Brockway. “We have also got some talented schoolboys in the gym, who could also become Welsh champions in the next few weeks.”

Merlins Bridge Amateur Boxing Club is holding a dinner show at the Withybush Pavilion on Friday, May 15th, which is a perfect opportunity for the club to showcase its talented boxers.
