Pembrokeshire Squash has 23 new referees

Pembrokeshire Squash clubs now have 23 new referees from all over the county, thanks to Pembrokeshire Squash sponsoring a referees’ course recently, which took place at the Meads Squash Club, Milford Haven Leisure Centre.

The course was run by Roy Gingel, the new Director of World Squash Referees, who is one of the five highest qualified referees in the world.

Roy has been on the World Referee list since 2000 and has refereed over 35 major WSF/PSA/WSA finals and represented Wales at three Commonwealth Games and various European Events.

Pete Crook, the secretary of Pembrokeshire Squash, commented:
“The importance of having qualified referees in charge of matches cannot be understated, the nature of the sport, having two players occupying and fighting for the same space along with the speed of the game, naturally means there will be a number of calls by the players during the match, which ultimately has to be sorted out by the referees.

“So these 23 new qualified referees will now have a far better understanding of the rules of the game, allowing them to make better informed decisions when a player calls within the game, this should also elevate any player disputes knowing they have a qualified referee in charge of the game.

“We could not have asked for a better tutor to take this course; to have someone of Roy’s calibre take the candidates through the session was invaluable and Roy was able to share some of his own experiences on the World professional circuit with the group.

“We would like to give a big thank you to Roy Gingel for his excellent course presentation and humour throughout the course.”
