Pembrokeshire Powerlifting Club celebrated the opening of their brand new gym in with the continued setting of new British, European and World records from some of their top-class lifters who have enhanced the club’s already-huge reputation in such a demanding sport.
In March the team comprising of Paul Murphy, and Andrew Murphy, Callum Lowe, Aaron Hoskins and Adrian Phillips travelled to Cornwall for the WPC European qualifiers where they all won their respective categories and Aaron came away with the best overall lifter award.
Local quartet star in BPOs
In April, Adrian Phillips, Penny Phillips, Andrew Murphy and Paul Murphy travelled to Bridgend for the BPO British championships, where Penny won the 67.5kg Master Two class and husband Adrian won the 90kg Master Three title.Andrew won the 100kg junior title and also took home the best junior lifter in Great Britain trophy whilst his father Paul dropped down a weight category to 82.5kg and broke the British Master Two squat, deadlift and total records. Indeed, the deadlift record which Paul broke had previously stood for over 20 years.
NEC super successes
April also saw Callum Lowe, Andrew Paul Murphy travel to the Birmingham NEC to compete at the Bodypower Expo in front of over 30,000 spectators. Callum won the 67.5kg raw (unequipped) deadlift title with a 185kg pull and with Andrew and Paul lifting in the deadlift ‘Superflight’ where the best pound for pound equipped lifters from all weight and age categories go head to head for a £300 1st prize.Andrew broke the 100kg world junior record with an easy 260kg lift while Paul broke the 90kg master Two world record with a 292.5kg pull and narrowly missed first place overall.
European glory
Most recently Pembrokeshire Powerlifting travelled to Stoke on Trent for the WPC European championships and this time Adrian Phillips, Andrew Murphy, Paul Murphy and Aaron Hoskins took to the platform. Adrian Phillips won the 90kg Master Three class and set new world records in the squat, bench, deadlift and total, whilst Andrew Murphy won the 100kg junior title and also best junior lifter in Europe award. Paul won the 90kg Master Two category and set new world records in the squat, deadlift and total before Aaron Hoskins won the 140kg open category and also won best overall open lifter in Europe!
