Chairman's Award winners 2015
The recent AGM of Pembrokeshire County Swimming saw some changes to
key officers, where long standing chairman Phill Thomas [Pembroke & District] handed over the reins after nine years to Paul Haley of Tenby Dolphins. Also new to post will be secretary Sharon Whalley (Haverfordwest Seals) who stepped into the breach following the post being vacated during the 2014/5 season and remaining unfilled.
Continuing on the committee will be Treasurer Gill Orchard (Pembroke & District), Mark Tancock (Swim Wales), Gary Nicholas (Pembrokeshire County Council), Jenny Llewellyn & Lynne Tobin (Pembroke & District) and Glenda Thomas (Fishguard Flyers). New representatives were appointed, namely Nicki Powell (Haverfordwest Seals), Makayla Doughty (Milford Tigers) and Sarah Hicks (Tenby Dolphins).
Gracious outgoing chairman
The outgoing Chairman was gracious in his acknowledgment of all the volunteers who make swimming the success it is in Pembrokeshire; to Pembrokeshire County Council for the unstinting support of the youngsters involved and to Development Coach, Craig Nelson and his assistant Sam Jones, whose efforts were acknowledged by all present.
Mr Thomas highlighted in particular,
“The sustained support received from the County Council in facilitating the Pembrokeshire Championships, which continued the theme of ensuring support to our swimmers in the water to further showcase the talent within the County. Mr Thomas received a gift in recognition of his services to the County committee from those swimmers present.
Coach Craig’s report provided
County Coach Craig Nelson also presented a comprehensive resume of the past 12 months, albeit through the voice of Sam Jones as Mr Nelson was part of the Swim Wales coaching team at the UK Schools Games in Manchester.
“The Performance Squad, sponsored by Specsavers (Haverfordwest) represented their County, Development Clubs and families with aplomb at ten swimming events, half of which were outside of Wales.
Daniel and Carys do so well
The highlights were undoubtedly that of Daniel Davies (Tenby Dolphins) swimming in the British Championships held in the London Aquatic Centre, where he had a credible meet, finishing 14th
“Daniel also represented Wales at the Commonwealth Youth games in Samoa, a first for Pembrokeshire County (and Daniel’s last event under the County banner as he attends the Swim Wales High Performance Centre this month) where he achieved 5th (400 Free) and 6th (200 Free). Carys Thomas (Fishguard Flyers) swam at the ASA Open Water Nationals in Sheffield finishing 7th in the 17/18 years 5K event.’
