Scores take the triathlon challenge!
Over 100 competitors took to the starting blocks for the last in a series of Pembrokeshire mini triathlons this summer.
One hundred and one budding sports men and women - as well as a sprinkling of seasoned athletes - took part in the mini triathlon at Fishguard at the end of last month, following earlier events at Crymych, Tenby and Haverfordwest.
Overall winners
The overall Fishguard winner was veteran Greg Lewis, while Catherine Marks was the first woman home.
Kyle Wheeler was the first male novice and Jennifer Dowey the first female novice.
The overall winners of the series of four mini triathlons were Jason Davies and Rhian Bruce, while Adam Goy and Heather Wale won the novice categories.
Targeted at beginners – with options aplenty
Organised by Pembrokeshire Leisure – the leisure services arm of Pembrokeshire County Council - and the Pembrokeshire Triathlon Club, the mini triathlons are aimed primarily at first timers.
Entrants take part in a 400m pool swim, a 12.5mile cycle ride and a three mile run.
Targeted primarily at novices, the events are also open to more experienced athletes, with competitors able to take on one triathlon or - if they want more of a challenge – tackle all four!
And if three different sports are a bit too much, they can also enter as a three–person team taking on the swim, cycle or run individually.
Cllr Elwyn praises the event
“These mini triathlons are all about encouraging more people into physical activity,†said Councillor Elwyn Morse, Cabinet Member for Sport and Leisure.
“With so much focus this year on the Olympics and with the Ironman Wales Triathlon staged again so successfully in Tenby last month, it's an ideal time to attract people into sport.â€
Gary's glad so many took part in four events
Gary Nicholas of Pembrokeshire Leisure said over 400 people had competed in the four mini triathlons this year.
“We hope they enjoyed the experience and will take part again in next year's series of mini triathlons,†he said, adding that the Go Tri mini triathlon events were one of two sport projects which had been awarded Inspire Marks, this year.
“Awarded by the Welsh Government, the projects have been developed by Pembrokeshire Leisure and Sport Pembrokeshire - the County Council's sports development arm - and are badges of quality that recognize innovative projects inspired by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.â€
