Young Rooks play well Carew entered an under 14’s team in the South Wales Junior Hockey Tournament in Brecon on Sunday and as well as learning from the experience played some good hockey as an added bonus.

The Carew young Rooks team is made up of  youngsters from around the county with Greenhill pupils  Ollie Wheeler (captain), John Mansbridge, Jack Burchmore, Alex Lloyd, Alex Orchard joined by Jack Evans from Haverfordwest and Elliot Colley from Fishguard.

Their results were:
Gwent A 1 – Carew 3
Gwent B/Abergavenny 1 – Carew 1
Abergavenny 1 – Carew 0
Brecon 0 – Carew 4

Carew’s first game against Gwent was a well-fought game with Carew coming out on top with three well worked goals.
Gwent B and Abergavenny teamed up to play Carew in a game where the Gwent Goalkeeper kept out a barrage of shots on goal from the young Rooks to earn his team a draw.

Carew lads show real courage

Abergavenny, borrowing the Gwent keeper for their match against Carew, saw the keeper again in fine form and once more denying Carew from several scoring chances.  In a really hard game Ollie Wheeler was taken out and floored by the goalkeeper and Jack Evans was hit on the head from a “tomahawk” strike at goal by the Abergavenny striker but they both bravely got up to carry on.

Carew finish in some style

In the final game Brecon were no match for the young Rooks and but for some fine goalkeeping by the Brecon goalkeeper it may well have been more.

Tournament goal scorers were Ollie Wheeler (3), Jack Burchmore (2), Jack Evans (2),  and Elliot Colley.
Another feature was some excellent marking and defending from John Mansbridge and Alex Orchard, with top goalkeeping from Alex Lloyd.
