During the first bank holiday weekend in May, the Llanion Warriors Rowing Club (based in Pembroke Dock), will be tackling the arduous, 100k, overnight race from Arklow to Aberystwyth. This is the fourth time the club has entered this biannual event, which is named the Celtic Challenge.

A team of 12 men and women (including some new members), who have trained since the start of the year, will try to beat the fifth place (completed in 24 hrs) achieved by the club two years ago in very rough conditions. They will be supported by a trailer team and the skipper and crew of Blue Thunder (a local dive and fishing charter firm). Hopefully this year the weather will be a little kinder!

The Club has always used the event to raise much needed funds for local charities. Over the last six years £16,500 has been distributed to a number of local organisations, so the team hopes to increase their donations this time around. The Club has chosen to support The Paul Sartori Foundation and the Mencap Gardens In Stackpole this time around.

The team are extremely grateful to a large number of local people, businesses and organisations (those who have contributed to date are listed below), who have supported in a variety of ways. If there are any more individuals or companies wishing to support our efforts, please contact Darrell Willington on 07966 182122 or at willers_machen@yahoo.co.uk

After the row the team will be holding a celebration BBQ at Cresswell Quay on Friday May 30th  (starting at 5.30pm) when all of the proceeds again will be added to the personal and corporate sponsorship collected by the team, to be disseminated to our chosen charities in June. Everyone is welcome to come along to support our fundraising; there will be face-painting, games and a cake stall.

The team warmed up last weekend by participating in the 23-mile Milford Marathon, rowed between Dale and Haverfordwest. The men’s team (which contained two women) won a famous victory in the Men’s category, whilst the “Golden Oldies” crew managed a very respectable 13th place overall (5th place in the mixed category, which involves three men and three women) in windy conditions.
