Almost 90 youngsters took to the pitch over the Easter holidays to take part in an innovative approach to hockey.

Eighty six boys and girls participated in four 4689 hockey camps organised by Sport Pembrokeshire, Pembrokeshire County Council’s sports development arm, and Hockey Wales.

4689 is a new route into the sport for youngsters aged between seven and 13 where the format is not based on age but ability, with the size of the playing area and team numbers gradually increasing as the children’s talents improve.

Camps held across county

The four Easter camps were held at Pembroke, Tenby, STP in Haverfordwest and Fishguard, and as well as taking part in team- building games and competitive matches, the youngsters were also given a skills and tricks session by former Welsh under 18 girls captain, Chloe Sinnott.

Pembrokeshire’s new Gold Hockey Ambassadors - Amelia Davies, Carys Owen and Nia George - assisted Stephanie Morgans and Angela Miles with coaching.

Angela Miles, hockey agent for Pembrokeshire, said she hoped that most of the youngsters would go on to join one of the three hockey 4689 fun centres in Pembrokeshire - at Tenby, Tasker Milward and Fishguard.
