A championship winning cricket team was invited to County Hall this week in recognition of the fact that it was the first time that Pembrokeshire has won a Regional Age Group final since the competition began.
The Pembrokeshire Under 15 Boys cricket team were this year’s Welsh winners as they beat hot favourites Gwent in the final at Pontypridd on September 1st.
Warm welcome from chairman
To mark their achievement, Pembrokeshire County Council’s Chairman, Councillor Arwyn Williams, recently invited the team to a special reception in Haverfordwest, with Deputy Leader Rob Lewis also in attendance.
Congratulating them on their win, Councillor Lewis said the boys had put Pembrokeshire cricket well and truly on the map.
“It was a fantastic achievement as the Gwent team were the firm favourites with eight current or former Welsh internationals in their side,” he said.
Great credit
“But the underdogs from Pembrokeshire upset the odds displaying great team spirit.”
He said the team were a credit to themselves, their families and supporters and to Pembrokeshire cricket.
“It’s the team’s last year in regional cricket so what a way to bow out!”
Ben’s delighted
Ben Field, Manager Sport Pembrokeshire – Pembrokeshire County Council’s sports development service - said the win had been underpinned by cricket’s strong club structure in the County.
“It’s great to see players from several clubs come together and work as a team to win in their final year of regional representation for the county,” he said.
