Boys score at hockey competition

A record 10 teams entered this year’s under-13s boy’s 5x60 hockey festival in Fishguard, which was eventually won by STP School.

Players from seven of the county’s eight secondary schools competed in a round robin competition organised by Sport Pembrokeshire - Pembrokeshire County Council’s sports development service.

The boys took to the pitch in teams nine-strong at Fishguard’s astro turf pitch with many schools fielding more than one team.

The outright winner of Group One was Ysgol Dewi Sant, which won all four of its group games, while a team from Sir Thomas Picton School won the second group, beating Ysgol y Preseli on goal difference.

STP win tight final

The Sir Thomas Picton team then beat Ysgol Dewi Sant in the final by three 3 goals to 1.
Hockey Agent, Angela Miles, said that despite the cold and windy conditions, the standard of play had been high.

“We hope that competitions like these will enthuse more boys to take up hockey and hopefully join their local clubs,” she said.

The boys all play hockey at 5x60 sessions in their schools.

5x60 is a Sport Wales initiative designed to encourage more young people to participate in sport and physical activity and is managed in Pembrokeshire by Sport Pembrokeshire.
