The summer’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will be a chance to inspire people of all ages and abilities to have a go at sport in Pembrokeshire.
With Wales set to send its largest ever team to compete in the world’s third largest multi-sport event, the sight of talented athletes in the red vest should result in many being motivated to try a sport themselves.
Local communities, clubs, organisations and individuals are being urged to work together to take advantage of the exposure of another ‘home’ Games and encourage even more people to develop a long-time love of sport.
Celebration launched
And to mark the countdown, a celebration of the 17 sports of the Commonwealth Games is being launched today (Monday) in Pembrokeshire.
The Western Telegraph, Radio Pembrokeshire, Sport Pembrokeshire and www.pembrokeshiresport.co.uk will be focusing on a different sport every week from now until the Games commence in 17 weeks’ time.
“Sixteen out of the 17 sports in the Games are represented by local community sports clubs, which is pretty amazing,” said Ben Field, manager of Sport Pembrokeshire.
“We want to encourage people of all ages to take part in sport in Pembrokeshire, and to raise awareness of the really good variety of clubs which exist.”
Huge range of sports
The sports are; Aquatics, Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Cycling, Gymnastics, Hockey, Judo, Lawn Bowls, Netball, Rugby 7’s, Shooting, Squash, Table Tennis, Triathlon, and Weightlifting / Powerlifting. The only Commonwealth sport without a local club is Wrestling.
Every week, Western Telegraph reporter Fraser Watson will try out a different sport - which will also be the focus of Radio Pembrokeshire’s Friday Night Sports Show.
Meanwhile, Sport Pembrokeshire will be promoting the sport all week on its social media (visit Sport Pembrokeshire’s Facebook page) with information on taster sessions, and how to get involved locally.
This week, the sport coming under the spotlight is Aquatics and Fraser will be training with Haverfordwest Seals Swimming Club.
Chief Executive of Sport Wales, Sarah Powell said: “Just like London 2012, the Commonwealth Games this summer is another ‘home Games’ which can create a spark of interest for young people to try out sport.”
