Junior sports clubs in the Haverfordwest area should receive a healthy boost to their numbers, thanks to a Community Sports Club open day held recently at Tasker Milward School’s Dome, which attracted more than 170 children, who enjoyed taster sessions in a wide range of different sports.It was organised by Sport Pembrokeshire – Pembrokeshire County Council’s sports development team - and supported by more than 20 local young sports ambassadors and leaders and Pembrokeshire Leisure.
Rominy is pleased with turn out
Rominy Colville, Active Young People Community Officer, said the aim was to give children the chance to find out more about sports clubs in the local area.
“All the clubs were really popular, and we got lots of positive feedback,” she said.
“We were really pleased with the turnout, and would like to say a big thank you to all the clubs and volunteers who gave up their time to make it such a success.”
Huge range of sport on offer
Fourteen local sports clubs were at the event providing taster sessions in golf, cricket, athletics, hockey, squash, tennis, weightlifting, rugby, girls’ football, street dance, wheelchair basketball, cycling, sailing, and gymnastics.
Rominy said she and her Sport Pembrokeshire counterpart in North Pembrokeshire, Elgan Vittle, aim to organise similar open days every school term, and that recruitment to local sports clubs after each event is usually around 10%.
“This school year, we have already held events in Tenby, Milford Haven, Fishguard and Crymych, and next in the pipeline is Pembroke,” she said.
