Neyland winger Delme Bateman on a surge to the line at the Quins

Division Four (West):

Mariners mauled again

Penybanc 50 Milford Haven 0

Milford Haven’s disappointing start to the new season continued at Penybanc as the home side reached a half century of points and the Mariners’ score-sheet remained blank throughout the match.

There was no shortage of effort from the Milford players but the home side were in control from the outset and there were try hat-tricks for experienced scrum half Ioan Jones and winger Wayne Price, plus others from centres Matthew Brayley and Christian Madge. Outside half Matthew Lloyd landed three conversions and his replacement Dylan Higgins added the extra points to two tries in a comfortable Penybanc victory.

Seagulls sunk in closing moments

Laugharne 25 Fishguard & Goodwick 21

Rugby Reports including Divisions Four, Five & Six 12th October 2013A last-ditch try by replacement Michael Williams, converted by Ross Michael, was just enough to give Laugharne victory over Fishguard & Goodwick, who were left to reflect on the fact that they had chances to kill the game off before that late score.

The Seagulls had unconverted tries by key back-rower Simon James (2) and centre Mike Jenkins to go with two penalties on target from scrum half Alun George but Laugharne were always eager to battle back and claimed tries by No 8 Carl Smith, and outside half Owain Thomas, alongside a conversion and two penalties by Ross Michael.

But the Seagulls were still ahead in the closing moments but then came those fateful final moments, when Williams followed a clever kick ahead to gain the touch-down so that Laugharne secured the spoils and the Seagulls had to settle for a bonus point for being within seven points of the opposition.

Division Five (West):

Quins win entertaining local derby

Pembroke Dock Harlequins 17 Neyland 10

Pembroke Dock Harlequins finally broke their season’s duck in Division Five (West) with this hard-fought victory over near neighbours Neyland in an absorbing clash at Bierspool.

Yet it was the Quins who made the brighter start in front of a good crowd when quick hands and a clever switch of direction by Mark Riley allowed full back Gregg Miller to put winger Delme Bateman in at the corner.

Rugby Reports including Divisions Four, Five & Six 12th October 2013Riley missed the difficult conversion and was unlucky with a long-range penalty attempt which rapped the crossbar and was scrambled clear – but was again involved alongside Steve Hamer and Adam Collins before full back Miller sliced over for an unconverted try.

Both sides had further chances before the Quins fought back near the interval as flanker Alex Pearce scored a try which fly half Adam Cawley converted.
Good work after the interval by Mark Davies, Joe Powell and skipper Barry Parsons set up the chance for the Quins to take the lead when scrum half Arian Heath sliced over from close range and again Cawley added the extra points.

Cawley also notched a penalty to nudge the Quins 17-10 ahead and that is how the scoreline stayed until the final whistle from referee Jackie Boswell (Llanelli).

Kieran kicks Scarlets to defeat

Pontyates 15 Pembroke 3

With Pontyates and Pembroke both going into this top-four clash boasting a 100% record something was bound to give and Kieran Evans was the toast of his colleagues as the home outside half landed five penalties to one from Pembroke’s Lewis Davies.

The first half was understandably tight and the home side led 3-0 as the Scarlets were left to rue missing a couple of half chances.

Lewis Davies hauled Pembroke level with a penalty but although Steve Dyde led by example in the back row it was Evans who found the target on another four occasions to leave the Scarlets with the disappointment of a first defeat.

Wasps wilt after promising start

St Clears 41 Llangwm 3

Rugby Reports including Divisions Four, Five & Six 12th October 2013

Chris Rodenhurst was the undoubted star of St Clear’s comfortable win over Llangwm as he scored 21 points from a try, three conversions and three penalties.

Llangwm battled hard as winger Mark Brimacombe and full back Rhys Daker tackled well whilst Ryan John, Daniel Eade and Andrew Milward battled hard in the close exchanges up front.

The Wasps actually took the lead with an early penalty from Andrew Brock but were 24-3 down at half time and could have few complaints about defeat as Nathan Price, Ryan Thomas, Ceri Jones and Gruff Thomas joined Rodenhurst on the Saints’ try sheet.

Division Six (West):

Saints struggle but keep going

Burry Port 80 St Davids 5

Rugby Reports including Divisions Four, Five & Six 12th October 2013

St Davids travelled to promotion favourites Burry Port with just 15 men and paid the inevitable price as the section leaders ran in 14 tries – but the Saints deserve every credit for never giving up and had the consolation of a late try.

The Saints were already trailing by 46-0 at the half way stage as full back Josh Element and outside half Adam Ruddle called the shots for Burry Port.

Element raced over for four tries and there was a brace for Ruddle alongside others by prop Jordan Williams, flanker Oliver Dunleavy, winger Ricky Wilson (2), replacement fly half Daniel Etteridge, second row Mike Evans, hooker Iwan Roberts and scrum half Scott Charlton, who slotted three conversions alongside two by Element.

But the loudest cheer of the day was reserved for the Saints as they trailed 75-0 but pushed their way upfield and were rewarded with a try by Russell Watkins, who was put over by a Geraint Morris pass.
