Pembrokeshire Knock Out Cup:
Cardigan 22 Fishguard & Goodwick 7
Cardigan fended off the strong challenge of a Fishguard and Goodwick side minus a few key players so that the Teifisiders made progress into the later stages of the Knock Out Cup.
Fishguard were well led by second row Nathan Jenkins in the absence of his brother Steve but it was his opposite number Llyr Griffiths who opened the scoring for Cardigan after seven minutes as the No 8 ploughed through some missed tackles to claim an unconverted try.
As well as Jenkins up front for the Seagulls, they had Gwilym Evans doing well in his unaccustomed role at No 8, whilst youth players Rhys Lewis and outside half Jason Lewis also caught the eye, the latter adding the extra points when Fishguard took the lead with a good try by skipper Jenkins after a well-controlled drive to the line.
Cardigan also had talented youth players on view in scrum half Luke Rogers and outstanding flanker Sean Owens, and the Teifisiders responded with a penalty from outside half Llyr Tobias to regain the initiative - and just before the interval skipper Griffiths struck again from close range and Tobias converted to put his side 15-7 in front at half time.
The second half was also hard fought but there were errors creeping in as a greasy ball made handling more difficult – and there was no further scoring until the final minutes.
Then the Teifisiders made the game safe with two minutes to go as replacement outside half Sean Edwards converted a try by right winger John Lumb, who showed real pace to outstrip the Seagulls’ cover from 30 yards out and send the home side into the next round as their reward.
