Division One (West):
All square in tense local derby
Crymych 15 - Whitland 15
Most local pundits felt that this derby between Crymych and Whitland was going to be very close and it proved to be just that as the Preseli Men led 8-6 at half time and the Borderers fought back to share 30 points.
Adam Phillips missed an early penalty chance for the home side before they opened their account when flanker Richard Sharp-Williams made the break and when he was held managed to pop the ball up for winger Gavin Thomas to score an unconverted try.
Whitland responded with a well-struck penalty by Johnny Thomas from 25 metres and after Adam Phillips had kicked three points for the Preseli men another penalty by Thomas made sure that the Borderers were just two points adrift at half time.
The Borderers had prop Danny Evans yellow-carded in the second half and although Adam Phillips missed the ensuing penalty he made amends when he added the extra points to a close-range try from prop Lewis Davies.
At 6-15 in arrears the Borderers might have felt they were on the way to defeat but they showed typical grit in clawing their way back with three more Thomas penalties, the second when Crymych were down to 14 men after front-rower Trystan Griffiths was sin-binned.
In a nerve-jangling finish, both sides had half chances with the Borderers finishing up in the Crymych 22 after Andrew Phillips missed a Crymych penalty chance and Huw Rees was also off-target with another home chance from long range.
Crymych fans were quick to point out that their team had won the try count by 2-0 but in the final analysis the few non-committed spectators might have said that a draw was the fairest final result after so much endeavour from both teams.
Johnny Thomas - kicked all of Whitland's points
Division Three (West):
Crompton edges Teifisiders home
Cardigan 13 - Llanelli Wanderers 12
A second half penalty by outside half Iestyn Crompton was just enough to give Cardigan victory by the narrowest of margins at the King George Vth Ground after visiting Llanelli Wanderers had led by 12-10 at the break.
The Teifisiders had youth player Luke Rogers making an impressive senior debut as he tried hard to link with his back row and his three quarters but it was the vastly experienced Crompton who nudged his side past the winning post with the only points of a hotly-contested second period.
Cardigan had already beaten the Wanderers by 49-12 in the Swalec Plate competition but the visitors showed they were in no mood for a repeat scoreline with an unconverted try after only six minutes from hooker Daniel Nicholson before Crompton notched his first penalty for the Cardis.
The Uplands managed a second try after 35 minutes as full back Dafydd Daniels crossed and No 10 Jonathan George added the extra points – but there was still time before the interval for influential Cardigan No 8 Llyr Griffiths to score a try which Crompton converted.
As conditions worsened in the second half the only points came from Crompton’s second penalty – but it was just enough to earn a welcome fourth league success of the season for the Teifisiders!
Llyr Griffiths - another try for Cardigan No 8
Blues beaten as Llanybydder fight back
Llanybydder 17 - Haverfordwest 3
A penalty by Ashley Sutton gave Haverfordwest a narrow lead against Llanybydder at half time but the Blues were unable to sustain their challenge and conceded 17 points after half time whilst being unable to add to their tally.
Both teams deserve every credit for battling hard in the conditions as Sutton landed his three-pointer whilst opposite number Llyr Davies was off the mark with two penalties at the other end in a competitive first half.
Llanybydder opened their account with a penalty try converted by Llyr Davies, who also notched a penalty to extend the gap to seven points.
At this stage the Blues were still in contention as Terry Lovell led by example up front but then home No 8 Carwyn Evans crossed for a try which Llyr Davies goaled to give his team their third win of the campaign and push them above Haverfordwest into tenth place in the table.
Seasiders’ hopes spoilt by the weather
Tenby United v Llandeilo - match postponed
Tenby United’s pitch at Heywood Lane fell victim to the weather and so the Seasiders will now have to rearrange this match later in the season – and drop down to third place in the section table behind Gorseinon and Penclawdd as a result.
Pembrokeshire Knock Out Cup Quarter Final:
Mariners make it into final four of KO Cup
Pembroke Dock Harlequins 12 - Milford Haven 29
Milford Haven moved into the semi-finals of this season’s Knock Out Cup as reward for their comfortable win over Pembroke Dock Harlequins at Bierspool, despite conceding an unconverted try after only 15 SECONDS!
Winger Liam Smith was the man who got the Quins off to such a blistering start but the Mariners showed why they are a division higher by recovering to lead 19-5 at the half way stage.
Outside half Ian Rusinek responded with Milford’s first try and half back partner Steve Picton slotted the conversion.
Then skipper Mike Cockburn, playing at prop for the Mariners, powered his way over for an unconverted try and they added a third just before the interval when Cockburn claimed his second try and Picton converted.
The Quins again scored first in the second period when full back Paul Jonkers sped over for a try converted by Adam Cawley – but Billy Marchant came on as replacement No 9 for Milford and scored a good try which Picton, by now switched to the wing, added the extra points.
