Eddie Butler is best known as a former rugby player with Pontypool and Wales who now writes a column in The Guardian national daily newspaper and commentates on international matches alongside Brian Moore, the former England hooker.
But now Eddie has published his first novel, entitled ‘The Head of Gonzo Davies’ where he uses the wealth of experience he gained as the captain of Pontypool and Wales for six of his 16 caps at No 8, plus as a British Lion and Barbarian. To create a genuine character in a novel where there are dark forces and real humour in almost equal measures.
Eddie had previously visited the Victoria Bookshop in Haverfordwest to sign his previous book called ‘The Greatest Ever Welsh XV’ and found a similarly warm welcome on this occasion as people turned up in good numbers to have his novel signed.
They were welcomed with warmth by the former Monmouth School and Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, student who has also been the presenter of two TV series with the BBC entitled ‘Wales and the History of the World’, plus ‘Hidden Histories.
'Grand Slam' novel
But this visit saw him promoting his new venture, which Clare Balding described as
“A Grand Slam winning debut of a novel.”
And no less a literary judge than Brian Moore told us,
“Expect the unexpected and hang on to your hats.”
“I really enjoy coming to Haverfordwest,” said Eddie, “because I meet up with old friends and new ones who want my book signed.
“Independent book shops like the Victoria Bookshop provide a great service and long may they continue to grace the high streets of our towns.”
