Johnny hat trick seals big win for Otters

Narberth 31- Tata Steel 19

Johnny Morgan - a potent force for Narberth
A hat trick from full back Johnny Morgan ensured Narberth convincingly won their final home game of the season against Tata Steel.

The dangerous full back opened the scoring just four minutes in, slicing through for a try which outside half Ianto Griffiths converted.

The visitors hit back when prop John Bansey drove over from close range and No 10 Steve Lewis added the extras – but the Otters grabbed two more unconverted tries to lead 17-7 at the break as second row Alex Jenkins and centre and captain Steve Martin crossed over.

Morgan then added his second soon after the oranges, and Griffiths converted, before Tata gave themselves hope when full back Lloyd Dogen scored and Lewis converted.

But the in-form Morgan sealed the verdict for Sean Gale and Jonathan Dodd’s men when he darted over to complete his treble, with Griffiths again converting, before centre David Greggs grabbed a consolation try for the visitors late on.

The Otters now lie seventh, and go to Bridgend Athletic on Saturday.

Borderers impress after difficult season

Whitland 42 - Ammanford 24Scott Newton - kicked well for Whitland

It was an entertaining clash at Parc Llwyn Ty Gwyn as Whitland finished a difficult season on a high by notching a bonus point win against Ammanford.

The Borderers were led out by veteran second row Dai Ebsworth and winger Fraser Watson, both playing their final game for the club, but the visitors appeared determined to deny the pair a fitting finale when flanker Sion James crossed in the opening minute.

However, the home side then took command and after No 10 Steffan James landed a penalty, full back Scott Newton set up winger Sean Coles to score in the corner.

Ammanford struck back with another unconverted try from scrum half Aled James, but home skipper and hooker Marc Jones then crossed following a break by James, who duly converted the try.

Flanker Ben Kirk then pounced on a mistake by the visitors to score his first senior try for Whitland, and James converted  - but on the stroke of half time second row Liam Barker crashed over for the visitors and No 10 Rhydian Morris converted which meant an frantic 40 minutes finished 22-17 in the Borderers’ favour.

James added a close range penalty after the break, and then in the final quarter the home side took command as centre Jonathan Thomas cut through for two tries in quick succession, before full back Scott Newton ran the length of the field to notch an interception try.

James added one conversion and although full back James Owens added a late score for Ammanford, and Morris converted, it came too late to prevent the Borderers jumping two places to eighth in the table.
