Tomi takes Preseli Men to last-gasp win

Amman United 25 - Crymych 29

A last-gasp try from hooker Aled Harries ensured Crymych maintained their superb winning run at Amman United on Wednesday night, a midweek victory that owed much to the clinical form of winger Tomi Jones, who notched his second hat trick in as many games as the visitors fought back from 25-17 down in the closing stages.

The Preseli Men spent much of the early parts of the season in the lower half of the table, but after seven consecutive league wins, now just need a solitary bonus point from their game against Newcastle Emlyn on May 16 to secure a top-four finish.

It was the already-relegated Amman who struck first when Adrian Thomas landed a penalty – but then Jones darted over in the corner for his first try of the evening before Douglas Jenkins restored Amman’s lead with a try that Thomas converted – but Crymych No 8 Joe Powell ensured the teams went in 10-10 at the break as he powered over for an unconverted try.

Action aplenty in second half

Early in the second half, winger Jones grabbed his second corner try, despite home protests that he had put a foot in touch, and winger Gavin Thomas added the extras.

But the end to end action continued when Gavin Lewis sniped over for the home side, and they were then back in front when Sean Mangan crossed for another unconverted score - and when Liam Smith crossed to increase the home lead to 25-17, Amman seemed set to end a difficult season with a win.

But the Preseli Men refused to cave in, and Jones gave them hope when he completed his treble to reduce the deficit to three points.

And then with the last play of the game, hooker Harries ploughed over for a score that Thomas converted – meaning Crymych have now not lost a league game since their defeat at Kidwelly on 7th February.

And they could yet have a major say in the destination of the league title, when they host an Emlyn side who are currently sitting in second place, and need six points from their final two games to knock Kidwelly off top spot.

Division 3 (West) B:

Seagulls finish in style

Fishguard 46 - Aberaeron 0

Section champions Fishguard ensured they finished the season with a 100% home record in Division Three (West) B as they comfortably accounted for Aberaeron on Wednesday night.

Indeed, the result means the Seagulls end with 44 points out of possible 45 at The Moors this season, with their win over Laugharne on September 20 the only time they failed to secure a winning bonus point.

Seagulls take early control

The visitors came into Wednesday’s game on the back of three straight wins, but it was the home side who took control from the outset- despite playing into a strong breeze, the champions led early on when a concerted lineout drive led to skipper and No 8 Simon James touching down.

And with flanker Chris Shousha outstanding in the ball-carrying stakes, there was more Fishguard pressure to come as centre Sam Kurtz broke through in midfield but his flicked pass just failed to find full back Mike Jenkins.

But moments later the Seagulls did get it right out wide, as Jenkins made ground down the right before exchanging passes with winger Gareth Adamson and diving over. Kurtz, as with the first try, was just off target with the difficult conversion.

Despite having the elements behind them, Aberaeron struggled to put prolonged phases of play together, and the champions struck again before the break after Shousha was held up over the line; but from the resultant scrum the Seagulls pack surged forward, and after the visitors infringed, referee John Griffiths had little option but to award a penalty try which Kurtz converted.

One-way traffic continues

The one-way traffic continued after the break as Huw Evans and Nathan Jenkins’ men killed the game off with three tries in the opening quarter, starting when Shousha rounded off some good handling for a try which Kurtz converted from out wide – before Jenkins provided an inside pass to Adamson, who duly finished well in the corner.

Shousha grabbed his second from close range after another forward drive – before home second row Rhys Lewis broke out of his own 22 and sped upfield, only to be denied by a cover tackle from Aberaeron flanker Daniel Lewis, who was by far and away his side’s best performer on the night.

But the Seagulls went on to add two further tries in the closing stages, as centre Ben John did well to stay infield as he brushed off two tackles to touch down by the corner flag, and Kurtz again converted well - and the final try came after surging runs from replacement prop Romeo Colella and hooker Gavin Walsh, who set up the platform from which Adamson supplied the scoring pass to replacement winger Ed Bendall.

Fishguard will now look to hold their own in Division Two West next season, where they will be Pembrokeshire’s only representatives following the relegation of both Haverfordwest and Cardigan.

Fishguard: Mike Jenkins, Gareth Adamson, Sam Kurtz, Ben John, Jerome Conlon, Alun George, Rhodri Morgans, Gerwyn Davies, Gavin Walsh, Ryan McVeigh, Raff Williams, Rhys Lewis, Owain Morgans, Chris Shousha, Simon James. Replacements: Ed Bendall, Romeo Colella, Rhys Williams, Jason Davies, Dai Evans, Gwil Evans.

Off-form Otters lose to Athletic

Bridgend Athletic 33 - Narberth 9

Last rugby reports of the season 2015Narberth produced a disappointing performance against Bridgend Athletic and could have few complaints about the result as they could only muster three kicks on target as the home side led 21-9 at the interval and stayed in control thereafter.

Yet the Otters opened the scoring with a Ianto Griffiths’ penalty and after home outside half Robert Evans had levelled matters Griffiths booted them back in front – only for Evans to notch his second three-pointer.

Nick Gale took over the kicking duties to add the Otters’ third penalty but it was the last time they were to lead as the Athletic claimed their first try by hooker Griff Davies, which Evans converted to go with a penalty to give his side a 12-point interval advantage.

The Otters were unable to raise the tempo after the interval and Bridgend Athletic added further tries from scrum half Jake Williams, converted by Evans, plus an unconverted try by winger Matthew Norman from short range – and the Otters need to raise the tempo for their final match, at Llanharan, next Saturday.

Ianto Griffiths - two more penalties for Narberth

Seasiders slump against Loughor

Loughor 45 - Tenby United 12

Last rugby reports of the season 2015

Tenby United finished off the season with a trip to Loughor where they were unable to take first half chances and were well-beaten by a side they had defeated 32-15 at Heywood Lane – and victory allowed Loughor to leap-frog over the Seasiders, who ended just one place above the relegation zone after a poor second half to their campaign.

Andrew Cook and Rob Clark scored the Seasiders’ tries, the second converted by hooker Gareth Jones but they were unable to prevent the homesters running in seven tries, five of them converted by fly half Tom Davies.

Full back Andrew Banfield and centre Peter Smiriglia claimed two tries each alongside others by winger Chris Banfield, second row Mark O’Kelly and flanker Tom Daniel, leaving the Seasiders to make the journey home with their 13th defeat from 22 matches after winning three and drawing the other of their opening four games in this section.
