Bank Holiday Rugby:
Division Two (West):
Mumbles 7 - Fishguard and Goodwick 38
Fishguard and Goodwick all but secured their place in the division for another season after one of their best displays of the campaign away at Mumbles RFC on Bank Holiday Monday.
The Seagulls led early on when hooker Gavin Walsh burst through the defensive line and cleverly off- loaded to winger Fraser Watson, on permit from St Davids, to score in the corner.
Mumbles hit back when Chris Claypole touched down from a driving lineout and full back Matthew Hughes converted but, crucially, the visitors struck twice on the brink of half time; first when James Griffiths cut through for a try he also converted, as he did when Mike Jenkins jinked through several tackles before setting up a try for centre partner Ben John.
Seagulls soar in second half
Griffiths pulled a difficult penalty wide early in the second half but despite having John sin-binned, Fishguard secured a bonus point when full back Kial Keane threw a dummy and cut over, and Griffiths landed the extras.
No 8 Mark George then powered over from close range for another converted try – before The Seagulls grabbed a sixth late on when Jenkins put Watson over in the corner for his second score.
It means that The Seagulls, barring an unlikely run of results, will play in the division again next season, and coaches Huw Evans and Nathan Jenkins were understandably delighted at their side’s all-round display.
