Rugby:Division Three (West) A:
Laugharne 76 - Pembroke Dock Harlequins 0
Venue: St Clears RFC
Because of the fact that the Laugharne rugby pitch becomes part of the town’s cricket outfield during the summer they had to play the fixture at St Clears RFC, who sportingly arranged for their facilities to be used so that the game could finally be played.
It meant that Laugharne skipper Carl Smith was able to round off his excellent spell of captaincy on a high-scoring note and although he didn’t manage to get on the scoresheet he was clearly delighted at the way his team deservedly ended up in third place in the section table.
The Laugharnees’ first-half tries came from winger Gareth Spiers, full back Tom Davies, winger Will Evans and centre Tom Jameson, three of them converted by centre Steff Davies.
Laugharne momentum maintained in free-moving second period
With the back row of Rhodri Thomas, skipper Smith and Mikey Williams revelling in the spaces that opened up, Laugharne rounded off their scoring as Steff Davies crossed the whitewash, as well as notching another five conversions.
It meant that The Quins had lost against Cardigan (64-0) and now Laugharne in a short space of time but deserve credit for at least fulfilling the fixtures – and now it will be interesting to see if they can make one last effort to make the long trek to Aberaeron to round off their programme.
