Fishguard winger Will James on the burst

Youth Rugby:

Llangwm 6 - Fishguard & Goodwick 41

Venue: Pill Parks
Referee: Martyn Rudd

Fishguard and Goodwick’s greater experience saw them to a deserved win at Pill Parks against a gritty young Llangwm side which also played its part in an entertaining game where the final scoreline was wider than the effort of the two teams might suggest.

The Young Seagulls defended the slope and wind in the first half and would have been pleased to be 12-6 in front with second use of the elements and that is how it turned out as the visitors claimed 29 unanswered points, most of them when Llangwm ran out of steam.

Cracking start for Young Seagulls

The Young Seagulls got off to a cracking start as they set up an attacking platform from which outside half Aled James kicked to the far corner for pacy winger Will James to gather and full back Ollie Rothero converted.

But Llangwm battled hard in the ball-winning stakes via their back row of Arwyn Loughlin, Seth Willington and Sam Rickwood and when referee Martyn Rudd, who had an excellent game, awarded them a penalty and scrum half Iwan Davies landed the three points.

Fishguard set up several attacks where they spread play wide but the final pass went astray so they opted for a forward-orientated period which resulted in outstanding No 8 Jac Delaney claiming an unconverted try after Osian Rowe, Will Lewis, Luke O’Sullivan and Tal Tamilia were involved.

A second penalty by Iwan Lewis reduced the interval deficit to six points but the loss of No 10 Owen Phelps was a blow for the Young Wasps as his injury necessitated a reshuffle.

Wasps struggle in final quarter

The third quarter was tight, nonetheless but Fishguard added a third try via hooker Kai Llewellyn as reward for all his hard work alongside Kyle Colella and Charlie Lavin, which was converted by Rothero, who also landed a penalty, to put them on top.

Harry Makepeace, Evan James and Fynn Tjoonk all defended well for the home side but further tries came from scrum half Ioan Hawkridge-Jones and winger Dylan Scott, with a second by Will James sandwiched in between.

So Seagull coaches Steve Rowe and Alan Phillips will have been delighted by the efforts of their young charges, whilst opposite numbers Dafydd Bowen and Jonathan Willington were quick to praise their squad’s efforts in a match where they will have learned a great deal to help their already-considerable progress in this their first season.
