Championship Division:
Otters send Sean off in style
Narberth 46 - Trebanos 28
In both matches The Otters gave the chance to youngsters like brothers Fraser (18) and Harvey Jones (20) to show their potential and this they did in style to send off director of rugby Sean Gale in style after 18 years’ service – and a new role as head coach at Llanelli Wanderers.
Their performance was all the more creditable because the game had to be played on the upper pitch at The Lewis Lloyd Ground but supporters simply sat on the grass bank or balanced on the opposite touchline – and enjoyed The Otters racing into a 20-9 interval lead thanks to tries by prop Ifan Jones (2), and winger Josh Evans (2).
Outside half Jonathan Rogers was off-target with the conversions whilst opposite number Robert Jones landed three penalties, the third from the last kick of the half, as his side also ran the ball but encountered a home defence that tackled well and turned over possession at key times.
Trebanos started the second half well with a try by George Sheppard, converted by Jones, but with scrum half Lewys Gibby causing all sorts of problems for the visitors they enjoyed a good spell where he created space for Josh Evans to claim his third try from the move of the match, which Fraser Jones converted
Another talented young player in centre Ilan Phillips crossed at the posts and Fraser Jones converted before replacement flanker Caine Rees-Jones powered over – and Trebanos deserved every credit for battling on and scoring tries by Connor Thomas and skipper Steff Lewis, the second converted by Jones.
At 39-28 to Narberth the visitors might have scented a shock finish but Otters’ skipper Tom Powell ended that as he was gifted a try as reward for some hard work alongside Josh Hamer, Ritchie Rees, Alex Jenkins and Rhys Williams, who was chosen as man of the match for his unsung work up front, with the likes of Tom Clarke and Bradley Davies.
It has been another excellent season for Narberth RFC and director rugby Jonathan Dodd will remain and have Liam Gadd as head coach, who is to be wished every success as he is joined by Matthew John (Haverfordwest) as backs’ coach and Ricky Guest (Llandovery) as forwards’ coach, whilst Chris ‘Cone’ James stays as team manager.
Leaving are former backs’ coach Deiniol Evans and players Sean Gale (backs coach at Llanelli Wanderers) and Dan Smith (retiring) as two fantastic playing servants of the club – and everyone at the club is to be congratulated on their part, on or off the field, in helping The Otters achieve a creditable fifth place in the table in a very strong tier of Welsh Rugby!
Division Two (West):
Seasiders so close to promotion but are pipped at the post
Nantgaredig 21 - Tenby United 28
In a topsy-turvy tussle it was Nantgaredig who took the lead after the teams sized each other up in the first quarter and there were no points, when outside half Meirion Davies put in a clever little chip ahead which he caught and set centre Rhys Schivone on a run to the line for winger Jacob Davies to convert.
The Seasiders attacked well to score a corner try for winger Matthew Morgan but Nant were awarded a penalty try for a collapsed maul near the line before Tenby showed their commitment with a good try by winger Max Brindley which Lloyd Thomas converted.
Then right on half time Nant had a player yellow-carded and Thomas landed a penalty with the last kick of the half to earn The Seasiders a 15-14 lead.
Both sides had chances in front of a large and vociferous crowd from both camps but with six minutes to go The Seasiders grabbed their third try as replacement flanker Jordan Evans rounded off a good move with a run to the posts for a try which Thomas converted before his team played a controlled game to the finish.
The Seasiders’ head coach Jonathan Evans was naturally a little disappointed afterwards but told PembrokeshireSport.co.uk that he was proud of his entire squad for their commitment to the cause.
“Every player has shown their belief in the club and so have our coaches , committee and supporters.
“Jake Roberts and Cam Broadhurst are still only 21 and we have some other young players who have gained experience and will be looking for regular places next season so we can look forward with confidence at Tenby United RFC.”
