Paul powers his way
to more world records
The Pembrokeshire Powerlifting Flag has again been flown in real style as Paul Murphy featured so strongly in the World Championships, held in Aldershot, that he was officially ranked as the best pound-for-pound powerlifter in the UK and as the second best pound-for-pound powerlifter in the world!
World titles No 11 & 12
Paul recently secured his eleventh and twelfth World titles at the World Powerlifting Championships in early November. He won the combined Powerlifting title (squat, bench press and dead lift) and the single dead lift title in the 40 years and over/90 kilogram weight category. His combined total of 792.5 kilograms and his dead lift of 312.5 kilograms were both World Records for that category.
To gain his success he had to fight back from a slightly disappointing start and he had to revise his strategy to go for a huge total in the dead lift that pushed him beyond what he had planned – but he showed his battling spirit as he came through to win.
He broke British, European & World records for total, deadlift and single lift with his Squat (310kg), Bench (170kg) and Deadlift (312.5kg) alongside the British, Euro, and World Records, whilst his combined lifts of 792.5kg also broke all three records.
New challenges and records galore!
Paul is already looking forward to the challenge of the next World Powerlifting Championships, which will be held in Chicago in November 2013 and so far his impressive records from1995 to 2012 are as follows:
7 times Welsh Powerlifting champion
Celtic games champion
12 times British champion
8 times European champion
12 times World champion
9 British records
8 European records
16 World records

Paul trains at STP gym and also coaches local male and female powerlifters. His most recent coaching success also came at the World Champs through Jo Mansell, of Milford Haven. She only began with Paul in March but since then has secured three Welsh titles, a UK title, and a World single dead lift title in Aldershot!
In May, Joanne won the Welsh championships in the powerlifting and single lift (deadlift), breaking all the current records. In August she won the Welsh Power Cup (deadlift) and in September she won the UK championships single (deadlift) and qualified for the British team. Now she is 60kg 40+ year-old women's world deadlift champion, lifting 132.5kg!
