Borderettes back on track
Whitland ladies 21 - Pencoed Ladies 5
Having lost their previous outing, Whitland women got their campaign back on track with a hard fought win against a gritty Pencoed outfit.
Good rugby brings tries
From the outset Whitland went on the attack and after some nice interpassing between forwards and backs, Catherine Davies powered over for the first try which she converted from wide out. Whitland tried to play their normal expansive game but were being cut down by some great defence from the visitors and it was nearly half time before some powerful forward drives by Ffion Jones, Sara Davies and Anneka Hopson created some space for outside half Alice James to score her first try of the season, converted by Davies.
Stop start affair
The second half was a stop-start affair with neither team gaining the upper hand but on their first foray into the opposition 22 Pencoed gave away a penalty which was taken quickly by the ever-alert Emma Summons at scrum half, and her wide pass found Nat Walsh, who crashed through the defence to score, the conversion again kicked by Davies.
Consolation score
The latter stages of the game were dominated by Pencoed and after a series of penalties which took the visitors up to the Whitland try line a fine pick and drive try was scored by Kathyryn Stonehouse.
The player of the match, picked by the opposition coaches, was Whitland centre Natalie Walsh.
