Welsh Women’s Rugby Super Cup:
Blaenau Gwent 0 - Whitland 33
The Borderettes came away from Crumlin with a great result in the Welsh Women’s Super Cup as they played superbly against a very committed and powerful Blaenau side.
The score line in no way reflected the game and the only difference in the two sides was the fact that Whitland managed to convert their scoring chances into points, whereas Blaenau were held up by the outstanding Whitland defensive plan.
Tries come in quick succession
The first try came after some powerful drives from Cath Morley, Angharad Williams and Natalie Walsh which splintered the Blaenau defence and Beca Norris picked up five metres out and powered over for an unconverted try.
The next try was a similar effort after some good interplay between backs and forwards, all coordinated by Alice James before the-ever alert Emma Summons popped over from close range and the extra points were added by Norris.
The next score was a good individual effort from the effervescent Williams at 8, after a take against the head by Sara Davies allowed Williams to break blindside and outpace the defence to score under the posts, and again the conversion was notched by Norris.
Then came the try of the day, from ruck ball on half way which was quickly moved blind by Summons before super quick hands by Walsh and Sara Medeni Davies freed winger Heather Rees, who neatly side stepped the full back to score under the posts so that Norris could add the extras.
Second half shift in power
The second half was the exact opposite of the first with Blaenau throwing everything into attack. They were unlucky not to get on the score board when a fantastic cross field kick by the outside half was gathered by the right wing who cantered over only to have it ruled out by the ref for off side.
Wave after wave of attack was repelled by the Borderettes defence with Lowri Morgan, centres Morley and debutant seventeen year old Rachel Norris to the fore. The only score of the half, which was very much against the run of play came from Whitland, as a classic tackle jackal by the ubiquitous Walsh was moved blind by Summons to Cath Davies, who drew the last defender and put Rees away for her second, converted by Norris.
A special mention to Rachel Norris, Sally Windsor and Emma Busch, who all acquitted themselves well in their senior debuts. Back of the match, picked by the Blaenau coach, was Cath Morley and forward of the match was Natalie Walsh.
