Welsh Women’s Super Rugby Cup:

Whitland 31   - Caernarfon 12

Fixtures between these two sides have always been close and this match was no exception, as for the opening ten minutes both teams tore into one another without abandon before the Borderettes finally gained the upper hand.

It was Whitland who opened the scoring when a Caernarvon attack was turned over in mid field by player of the match Nat Walsh before the ball was quickly moved wide by half backs Emma Summons and Alice James for centre Jenny Collins to side step through the mid field and score under the posts to make for an easy conversion for Cath Davies.

Rees races through

The next score was very similar to the first, with ball turned over again by Walsh speedily moved wide to Heather Rees on the wing, whose turn of pace  left several tacklers in her wake as her touchline sprint took her clear to score under the posts, making it another easy conversion for Davies.

Caernarfon opened their account after a good kick down field resulted in a scrum to the home team – but a mix up at the base led to the Coffi's captain Cenin Eifion scooping up the loose ball and crashing over.

Cracking Borderettes’ tries

From the resultant kick-off the Borderettes regained possession on the half way and a lovely timed pass from James put Walsh into space. She side-stepped the final defender and sprinted away to score under the posts, before Davies again added the extras.

There then followed a superb passage of play in which the ball was handled by every player in the Whitland team, and was eventually moved wide to Rees, who sprinted away but superb cover defence brought her down just short of the line. The ball was moved away from the ruck and Davies was on hand on the opposite wing to crash over.

Caernarvon come back

A lack of concentration in the Borderettes’ defence left the Caernarfon girls in just on half time when a high ball was not dealt with and up popped centre Alaw Davies to score under the posts and Sera Bailey added the extras.

The greater part of the second half belonged to Caernarfon girls. They camped in the Whitland 22 but could not get over the white wash as superb defence led by Collins, Cath Morley, and flanker Lowri Mogan kept them out.

Whitland finish in style

Towards the end of the game a good line out take by live wire No8 Angharad Williams led to a series of powerful drives by Walsh, Sara Davies and Caryl Lloyd but it was the ubiquitous Morgan who made the final drive to the line to score a try for the Borderettes that was the final act in a highly competitive, yet sportsman-like game.
