Burton Ladies Cricket Club are the Skelfayre Cup winners for 2014 after beating their old rivals Cresselly Ladies Cricket Club in an entertaining  final (Sponsored by G.G.T Thomas and Son Ltd) at Hook Cricket Club.
Cresselly hold big first innings lead
Burton won the toss and elected to fielding first and Cresselly had a slow start against tight bowling from Ffion Ashman (1-26) and Rebecca Jones (1-16) but with Sophie Arthur (17), Eleri Williams (36 not out) and Lauren Arthur (16) at the crease Cresselly ended on 85 for 4 in their allotted 20 overs.

Cresselly opened the bowling with Megan Jenkins (1-14) and Lauren Arthur (1-12) whilst Finola Scale (14) and her mother, Elaine Scale, opened the batting for Burton. Elaine Scale was dismissed by a return catch to Megan Jenkins before  Eleri Williams and Sophie Arthur bowled outstandingly, both taking four wickets each, with  a special mention to Rachel Hughes behind the stumps for taking three catches and a stumping meant that Burton were 58 all out, 27 runs adrift.

Burton’s fight back begins

After tea, Burton needed to keep their bowling tight in order to keep Cresselly's run rate down as Rebecca Williams (10) and Megan Jenkins (36) opened the batting for Cresselly whist Burton opened the bowling with Ffion Ashman and Rebecca Jones (2-13).

Rebecca Williams was out in the fourth over which led to Eleri Williams (34) pushing up the run rate until she was run out by Finola Scale (1-20). Cresselly finished on 89-5 and with their lead of 27 it meant that Burton needed 117 to win.

Finola and Elaine Scale opened the batting for Burton whilst Megan Jenkins and Lauren Arthur opened the bowling for Cresselly as Burton had a great start with mother and daughter at the crease taking quick singles and hitting boundaries from bad balls until Elaine Scale (27) was caught by wicket keeper Rachel Hughes off Rebecca Williams’ bowling in a 2-27spell.

Finola fires Burton to victory

Finola Scale went on to make a tremendous 53 not out, with a string of good boundaries, whilst her sister Llewela Scale helped with a quick 17 which led to  Burton needing one run off the last over.

Llewela Scale managed to get a quick single off the first ball which made Burton Ladies the Skelfayre Cup Winners for 2014, with the player of the match being the captain of Burton - Finola Scale.

It was a great day for ladies’ cricket and a special thanks to Hook Cricket Club ground staff and to the ladies for providing teas.
