Blues scrum half Sophie Rees makes a break

Haverfordwest 40 - Gorseinon 5

If Haverfordwest Ladies thought they were in for an easy home game against bottom-of-the-table opposition on Sunday, they were very much mistaken because the Lady Blues came up against a gritty and determined Gorseinon side, who had improved considerably since the last time the two sides met.

In favourable conditions Haverfordwest, who are unbeaten in division two this season, were able to field a full strength team, welcoming back outside half Joanna Price, who had been away on Wales’ football duty.

Lady Blues lead at the interval . . .

Awen Prysor opened the scoring for the homesters with one of her typical cutting runs, followed by skipper Nina Colville, who handed off several defenders in typically robust fashion, to cross the line before in-form scrum half Sophie Rees added to the points before Prysor got her second of the game.

Gorseinon were clinical at the breakdown and enjoyed good spells of possession throughout the game and they crossed in the corner for a well-deserved try in first half.

But their effort was cancelled out by Stephanie Harris early in the second half, before Hayley McCartney rounded off the afternoon’s scoring with a great team try as Price made the most of the conditions, converting five of the six tries.

A special mention goes to Lady Blues’ full back Emily Carrington, who continues to impress during her first season of senior rugby.

*Haverfordwest take a break from division two next Sunday, when they host division one leaders Ynysddu in the plate semi-final of WRU Super Cup.
