Hook Ladies retained the Skelfayre Cup as they used their greater experience to good effect against their counterparts from Johnston, who battled all the way but were always under the cosh after trailing by 44 runs at the tea interval.
Johnston struggle after steady start
Johnston won the toss and elected to bat first but after a steady start where Katy Farr (11) and Olivia James (13) reached double figures but the former was run out and the latter well caught by Kath Adams off the bowling of Alice James, who finished with excellent figures of 2 for 14.
Adams returned good figures of 1 for 9 in her four overs alongside tight spells by Nicola Hutchings, Leanne Jones, Nicola Lepetit and Hayley Thomas so that only Emma Summons (11 not out) and Naomi James (8 not out) ever looked settled as they had to settle for 61 for 5 in their allotted 20 overs.
Rossiter guides Hook to three-figure score
In stark contrast, Hook’s experienced openers Jo Kerrison and skipper Sam Rossiter looked settled from the outset and built their momentum steadily in a profitable stand of 104 before Rossiter was finally caught by Emma Summons off the bowling of Becky Norris in their final over as part of a 1 for 17 analysis.
But by then Rossiter had reached 56, including six boundaries, her 50 coming in 53 minutes from 63 balls faced – and at the other end Kerrison moved serenely to 38 not out, including five fours.
Summons bats well but Johnston still struggle
Johnston needed an electric start to their second innings but were soon in trouble as Olivia James was run out for only three before Nicola Hutchings shifted Nia Williams and Becky Norris early to return fine figures of 2 for 9.
But Katy Farr grafted her way to 13 before she was caught by Adams off Leanne Jones’ bowling and Rhiannon Morgan (10) also supported Emma Summons as the No 5 top scored with a battling 31 not out (four fours) but Adams (1 for 12) and Lepetit (1 for 5) kept a brake on the run rate so that Hook needed only 29 runs from their second innings to retain the silverware.
Changed batting order but Hook still win at a canter
Kate Miller and Fay Ryan were given the chance to bat high in the order but both departed early to Olivia James and Rhiannon Morgan before Leanne Jones (10 not out) and Alice Thomas (a speedy 16 not out) saw their team to victory by eight wickets in only 7.1 overs.
The trophy was presented to Sam Rossiter by Mrs Jayne Thomas, from the sponsors, Gerald Thomas & Sons, and the Hook captain also collected the ‘Player of the Match’ trophy, which was adjudicated by Finola Scale of Burton Ladies.
