Wide range of scoring in this week’s quartet of matches

Venue: The Neyland Hub Community Centre
Umpires: Rob Bellerby, Ryan Lewis, Clarissa Lewis & Ffion Ashman
Scorers: Wendy Bradshaw, Danny Potter, Lauren Clancy, Chrissie Toy

Again the wide range of experience was emphasized in the four games this week as totals ranged from 19 for 3 to 91 for 5 in the eight-over tussles superbly organised and supported by Sam Rossiter again this week.

But although there is inevitably that range of scorers they will flatten out a fair bit by the end of the campaign because there are some useful players in some of the less experienced teams.

Another positive note this week is the fact that there were many umpires and scorers ready to give of their time so well done all of you!

Match One – Carew (30 for 3) lost to Neyland (31 for 2)

Maddie Potter (Neyland)In a low-scoring start to the evening, Carew could only muster 30 for 3 from their eight overs and Neyland replied with 31 for 2 with nine balls still in hand.

Carew found it hard going against very accurate bowling and tight fielding against a far more experienced opposition where Maddie Potter claimed 2 for 3 and Jade-Louise Major (1 for 8) were the wicket takers and had support from Brogan Cole and Jaz Kerrison.

Carew stood at 2 for 3 early on as Jackie Graham, Lily Cole and Bryony Nicholas came and went before the innings ended with Beth Hawkridge (6) and Eve Kidney (8) batting well and both not out – but with no runs coming from half the balls bowled in the Carew innings.

Neyland also started badly as they lost Bethan Chapman (caught by Bryony Nicholas off Lily Cole for 2) and Emma Reeves, bowled by Bethan for a duck. But Maddie Potter again showed why she is so highly thought of in cricket ‘up the line’ as she saw Neyland home on 13 not out alongside Jaz Kerrison (14 not out).

Cresselly

Match Two – Cresselly (91 for 5) beat Carew (19 for 3)

Kelly Midgley (Neyland)Cresselly powered to victory over Carew as they hit a huge 91 for 5 and then restricted Carew to 19 for 3.

Carew made a promising start as a good return catch be Lily Cole saw Ava Midgley out for 6 and then Beth Hawkridge removed Jess Lewis for 12 – but then Ffion Ashman (32 not out after earlier retiring on 25) and Zoe Minnet (29 not out) really increased the tempo of their innings before Claire Lewis (3) fell to Bryony Nicholas and Phoenix Phillips (run out for 6) departed and their openers added slightly to the final tally despite good bowling from all the Carew bowlers.

Carew were soon on the back foot in this local derby when Lily Cole was run out and Gemma Lloyd was bowled by Ffion Ashman, both without scoring, and Eve Kidney (5) bowled by Jess Lewis.

Bryony Nicholas (3 not out) and Beth Hawkridge (7 not out) were there at the end but the bowling of Ava (one maiden in 1 for 3), Ffion (1 for 7), Jess (1 for 5) and Phoenix (0 for 4) were just that little bit too accurate for a Carew team that is sure to grow in confidence the more times they play.

Match Three - Neyland (54 for 6) lost to St Ishmaels (56 for 1)

Tracy Chandra (St Ishmaels)Neyland’s hopes of a big score got off to an awful start as Maddie Potter (5) and Jade-Louise Major fell respectively to a return catch by Tracy Chandra and then Tei Tallett pouched a catch off Rachel Maguire.

Perhaps worse was to follow as Jaz Kerrison (0), Brogan Cole (5) and Emma Rees (4) were all run out as St Ishmaels fielded well – before a cracking innings of 36 from experienced last batter Kelly Midgley, who rescued the situation somewhat before she was run out with two balls of the innings still left as Neyland were 54 all out.

In sharp contrast, Tish started their response really well via Tracy Chandra and Rachel Maguire before the former retired on a hard-hitting 25 from only 19 balls, including three boundaries.

Tei Tallett could only muster three runs before she was well caught by Emma Reeves off talented teenager Maddie Potter but the ebullient Linzi Picton strode to the crease and belted 11 runs in only six balls – and Maguire was still there on 12 not out to give Tish a morale-boosting victory!

St Ishmaels

Match Four – St Ishmaels (64 for 5) lost to Cresselly (65 for 3)

Ffion Ashman (Cresselly)Tracy Chandra was again the Tish top scorer in their match against Cresselly as she scored a massive 51 not out in a final tally of 64 for 5 but it still wasn’t enough as their experienced opponents paced their replay well to achieve their target for the loss of only two wickets with nine balls to spare.

Chandra blitzed two fours and two sixes as she faced only 32 deliveries but at the other end there were run outs for Linzi Picton (3), Cath Orton (3) and Annie Thomas (0). Rachel Maguire (1) was bowled by Ava Midgley and Sabrina Sweeny (1) suffered an unusual dismissal as she was out ‘hit wicket’ to Jess Lewis.

Cresselly started well until Claire Lewis was run out for 11 but the partnership between another talented teenager in Jess Phillips, who retired on 27 from 21 balls, and Zoe Minnet (20 not out from just nine deliveries) took them within sight of success.

They did lose Ffion Ashman (run out for 3) and Jess Lewis stood at the other end just long enough to see Zoe, hit the winning runs despite the wholehearted efforts of Tish in the field!
