Neyland ‘B’ again showed why the club is the top indoor league team in local cricket as their newly-formed ‘B’ team proved far too strong for Whitland and Cresselly to win both their games in the second week of this season’s competition.

Cresselly lost to Whitland to round off a series of matches in which a feature was the number of talented young players who played indoors for the first time – and had the oldest player to compete so far in 56 year old Lyn Rees, who smashed a six to help Neyland ‘B’ defeat Whitland in the top match of the afternoon!

Match One:

Cresselly (48 all out) lost to Neyland ‘B’ (50 for 2)

Cresselly struggled to improve on the previous week’s disappointing batting as they lost Luke Cole for a duck and Johnny Palmer for six runs to Nathan Banner, with Nick Davies managing only two runs before he was caught by Scott Jones off the bowling of Phil Keen.Neyland ‘B’ emulate their ‘A’ team

Matthew Palmer (5) and Tom Arthur (5) also departed cheaply as 14 year old Geraint Rees shifted the former to claim his first scalp.

Only Scott Arthur (20) managed double figures as he hit two sixes but was caught by banner to give Keen splendid figures of 3 for 5.

It was never likely to be a target to test Neyland but Johnny Palmer gave Cresselly early hope as he bowled Geraint Rees for a duck and had Jason Oatley (12) superbly caught at gully by Tom Arthur. But Nathan Banner struck 25 before he was forced to retire, being particularly punishing on Luke Cole, and with Scott Jones still there at the finish, Neyland reached their target in only 5.1 overs.

Match Two:

Cresselly (92 all out) lost to Whitland (94 for 1)

Whitland showed why they have been previous winners of the indoor league as they comfortably accounted for a Cresselly side which batted far better than in previous matches.

Tom and Scott Arthur both scored 27 before having to retire and Matthew Palmer chipped in with 11 runs as David Dunfee bowled really well for Whitland to concede only five runs and there was a wicket apiece for Connor Bowen, Paul Davies and Geraint Phillips.

Dunfee also batted strongly before he retired on 25, as did Paul Davies for 26, with Ed John ending on 21 not out. Geraint Phillips also contributed 15 before he was bowled by Tom Arthur as Whitland won with more than two overs, and five wickets, in hand.

Match Three:

Whitland (102 for 4) lost to Neyland ‘B’ (107 for 2)

Whitland pushed Neyland ‘B’ all the way in an absorbing clash that provided a fitting finale to the afternoon’s play as veteran Lyn Rees replaced his teenaged son Geraint and played an important role before hitting the winning six with two balls left.

Paul Davies led the Whitland batting with a classy 38 as he retired on 25 and then came back when his team ran out of batsman, supported by Dunfee (18) and Jack Bowen (19) as Scott Jones claimed 2 for 21 and Rees (senior) grabbed a wicket and also ran out key Whitland batsman Ed John.

A final Whitland tally of 102 for 4 was a reasonable score but Whitland were soon in control as Nathan Banner and Scott Jones both scored 27 before retiring. Alex Codd (11) and Phil Keen (16) maintained the momentum before getting run out – and it nicely set the platform before Rees contributed his 12 not out, finishing in style. Jason Oatley was 6 not out at the other end – and Neyland ‘B’ deservedly find themselves on the top of the table alongside their ‘A’ team counterparts!
