Hugh Morris & Paul Webb after the Glamorgan Road Show
The Glamorgan Road Show came to Pembrokeshire last week as top officials, players and coaches were available at Haverfordwest Cricket Club to promote the top Welsh county’s ideas and ideals to cricketers and other interested parties from around our county.
Leading the way for Glamorgan was Hugh Morris, who is the new Chief Executive Officer after a decade working with the senior England team as technical coaching director, acting chief executive and deputy chief executive before being appointed to the post of chief executive and getting involved in the two Ashes’ wins against Australia and the epic success in India.
Hugh also played three times for England as an opening batsman and skippered Glamorgan for a number of years before returning to the fold. He was introduced by excellent MC for the evening, Robert Croft, another former England player and cricket coach with Glamorgan as well as being a Sky Sports TV pundit. Hugh recalled the time when he played for Haverfordwest on a tour to the USA alongside his old friend Mark Sexton and then outlined his aspirations for the season and his determination to see cricket participation encouraged to the full in Wales, “from the playground to the Test arena.”
It was an ideal also established at the start of the evening, in his Power Point presentation, by Peter Hybart, the Chief Executive Officer for Cricket Wales. He talked about how wide a compass Cricket Wales now has and, like Hugh Morris, was ready to answer questions from the audience.
Also in attendance was another former England player and current Glamorgan coach in Steve Watkin, plus experienced players Dean Cosker and Mike Wagg, whilst promising young players in attendance were Andrew Salter and Jack Murphy, both from Pembrokeshire.
At the close of the evening, Glamorgan’s entourage was thanked by Paul Webb, the vice-chairman of the Pembroke County Cricket Club. He apologised for the unavoidable absence of county club chairman Tony Scourfield and wished Glamorgan well for the 2014 campaign, as well as all the clubs around our county, and in particular the Neyland players who were carrying the Pembrokeshire Flag with such distinction as they were one of the four teams from all over the UK who approached the National Indoor Finals at Lord’s.
