Neyland’s quest for a second appearance at the ECB Indoor Cricket Finals at Lords received a significant boost as the recently-crowned Welsh champions travelled to Cheltenham to take on the local Civil Service team in a regional final and came away with a comfortab
Neyland skipper Sean Hannon started off well by winning the toss and asking the opposition to bat first against an accurate bowling attack backed up by a committed Neyland fielding unit.
Banner bowls an early maiden
Key fast bowler Nathan Banner then gave them a cracking start by bowling a rare maiden over in this version of cricket and it set the tone for what was to come as the home side were never able to accelerate the run rate out of Neyland’s control so that they could only muster a final tally of 84 for 4 from their allotted 12 overs.
Opening bat David Leadbetter scored 27 before retiring, having shared a solid but unspectacular partnership with Rob Baker (23), who was well caught by Patrick hannon at mid on, the ball flying to him off the side wall but safely pouched.
From there, Ashley Sutton, Patrick Bellerby and Patrick Hannon all effected important run outs to build the pressure as Banner finished his three-over stint having conceded a miserly nine runs, assisted by Koomen (1 for 16), Bellerby (0 for 21) and Patrick Hannon, who was a little more expensive than usual with 0 for 30, all from three overs apiece.
Neyland overcame early wicket losses
Neyland lost Nick Koomen for only eight runs as he went for a four but only succeeded in rifling his drive to mid-on, and Banner departed for 13, run out from a direct hit, but Ashley Sutton maintained the splendid form that has seen him yet to be dismissed this indoor season, stroking seven threes in his 27 before he again retired.
Patrick Bellerby (12) and Sean Hannon (9) completed the task as Neyland’s not out batsman and they reached their target for the loss of only two wickets in just nine overs to set up another long-distance trek in the next round against the winners of the Isle of Wight, Dorset and Taunton areas in the South West Region play-off.
