Marsh takes Kilgetty past the winning post

Kilgetty (119 for 7) beat Whitland 2nds (116 all out) by 3 wickets

Some splendid late batting by Geraint Lewis and Geoff Marsh helped Kilgetty past the winning post in their vital match against Whitland Seconds after at one stage lurching to 71 for 6 in pursuit of the opposition’s less than challenging 116 all out.

Whitland’s hopes of a score to test the league leaders rested on Dai Lee (36) and Matthew Lewis (33) but only Gethin Scourfield (19) ever stayed long besides them against tight bowling by home skipper Ross Hardy (4 for 28), Anthony Bevan (1 for 19), Geraint Lewis (2 for 18) and Andrew Evans (2 for 17) as they were dismissed for a disappointing total of 116 all out.

Although Hardy (13) and Toby Poole (12) provided early cameos Kilgetty were finding the absence of five key players something of a worry against Geraint Phillips (3 for 23), Stuart Harries (1 for 22),  Matthew Lewis (1 for 33) and Gethin Scourfield (1 for 22).

But then Lewis scored 33 (six fours) and Marsh belted five fours and a six in his vital 35 not out to keep Kilgetty firmly in the title race as promotion favourites.

Last Town pair foils Pembroke’s hopes of victory

Pembroke (204 for 9) drew with Haverfordwest 2nds (130 for 9)

Scorer: Kelly Williams (Haverfordwest)

Pembroke were held to a draw as the last Haverfordwest pair of Jonathan White and Clive Tucker held on at the end but with Burton’s defeat at Llangwm, Paul White’s boys are now 21 points in front of Burton in the promotion race and still within distance of Kilgetty for the silverware.

Pembroke looked set for a mammoth score when they stood at 152 for 3 but then Haverfordwest 2nds fought back quite well as veteran all-rounder Nigel Morgan maintained his run of fine form with another splendid haul of 5 for 20 alongside Ashley James (3 for 53) and Clive Tucker (1 for 18).

Barry Evans (52) and Jack Harries (57) were responsible for Pembroke’s successful start but thereafter only Phil Hay (30) really troubled scorer Kelly Williams and although the home side must have been satisfied to pass the 200-mark knew they might have amassed even more but for Morgan’s timely intervention.

Josh Hicks (27), Nitin Mathias (27) and Jake Merry (18) topped the batting for The Town Seconds but no-one was able to compile a match-winning score against Billy Wood (3 for 36), Sam Davies (4 for 16), Andrew Hay (1 for 1) and Jake Seaton (1 for 5) so that Pembroke deservedly took the lion’s share of the points.

Llangwm dent Burton’s promotion hopes

Llangwm (281 for 9) beat Burton (227 all out) by 54 runs

Umpires: Trefor Evans & Paul Webb
Scorer: Dennis Venables (Burton)

There were big innings aplenty at Pill Parks as Llangwm severely dented Burton’s promotion hopes in a match where there was a century apiece and almost a third one before Joe Kiff’s boys showed they are a better side than recent results might suggest.

Llangwm started the match with only ten men and had to field throughout the Burton innings with nine players but the excellent batting of Luke Brock (eight fours and nine sixes in a typically powerful 120) and Matthew Kiff (91, including six fours and seven sixes), assisted by Phil Llewellyn (31) meant that they had set a huge challenge for Burton, who had James Davies (6 for 64) as their young bowling star alongside veteran Johnnie Scale (2 for 52).

Then Jonathan Venables launched the Burton batting on such a gigantic run-chase with an excellent 103, with support from skipper Morgan Scale (30) and Will Bowen (20) but they lost players at key moments.

Matthew Kiff completed a good all-round performance with 3 for 56 as Ollie Davies (2 for 38) and Andrew Harries (2 for 16) also got amongst the wickets, giving Llangwm victory and leaving Burton in need of something special next week if they are to leap-frog Pembroke in the promotion chase.

Cresselly Seconds win basement battle

Cresselly 2nds (139 for 7) beat Hook (119 all out) by 20 runs

Scorer: Des Brace (Cresselly)

Cresselly 2nds won their basement battle against Hook by 20 runs and although both teams were already relegated they deserve credit for playing the game in a competitive but good-spirited manner.

Cresselly’s main run-gatherers were skipper Richard Harris (21), Lyn Richards (31), Stefan Jenkins (20), Simon Hart MP (35), Jim Kinnear (12) and Tim Webb (11 not out) but no-one was able to build a commanding score against Bradley Flood (2 for 35), Brennan Martin (2 for 21), Jake Wicks (1 for 15), Aled Phelps (1 for 30) and Callum James (3 for 21).

When Hook batted only teenagers Noah Davies (46) and Jacob Lay (42) ever got settled against the experienced Cresselly quartet of Jim Kinnear (1 for 21), Richard Harris (3 for 38), Lyn Richards (3 for 20) and Stefan Jenkins (2 for 13) as the home side eased over the winning line.

Mackay leads Stackpole to winning draw

Stackpole (241 for 4) drew with Carew 2nds (135 for 8)

A splendid innings of 138 by Stackpole skipper Richard Mackay was the undoubted highlight of his team’s draw against Carew 2nds where they pouched the bonus points on offer as the visitors rarely looked likely to chase down such a big score.

Mackay is currently in a rich vein of form and in his boundary laden innings he had support from Iorrie Roberts (41) and Lewys Gibby, with a typically aggressive late 36 not out which launched Stackpole to such a big tally.

Carl Thomas led the Carew batting with a nice 46 but Rob Mathias (2 for 2) and Dewi Roberts (2 for 31) meant that Stackpole pocketed 24 points to Carew’s five.
